Govern Faubus publicly expressed his wish on numerous occasions that the little Rock Nine to be removed from Central High. Although several of the black students had positive experiences on their first day of school, but still experienced daily harassment and even violence through the rest of the year. For instance, Patillo was kicked, beaten and had acid thrown in her face and at one point white students burned African-American effigy in a lot across from the school. In 1999, President Clinton awarded each member of the group the Congressional Gold Medal. The nine also all received personal invitations to attend President Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2009. These nine students are still talked about in present day. Students in United States History are learning about the important impact these students made, not only in Arkansas, but worldwide.
