The proposition did pass in the state. But was later taken to the supreme court and ruled unconstitutional. This proposition violated more than one clause. The first clause it violated was the due process clause which states “No state shall deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law." The proposition was not being done with fair procedures and was depriving the children's’ right to public education which is considered a liberty in the United States. The second clause that it violates was the citizenship clause which states,”All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside." This proposition wanted to deny children who were born here, who are citizens, the right to education and healthcare due to their parent immigration status. Relating to today’s news, during President Trump campaign he referred to children whose parents are immigrants as “anchor babies.” This derogatory term is offensive and implies immigrants have American born children to reside in the United States. Not only is Trump offending those children who are citizen he is also using the slur for his racist remarks towards people of color.
