The Louisiana Purchase was the best purchase ever made by the United States. The purchase of this land increased the economic resources of the United States. For one, it gave us complete control of the Mississippi, which helped many farmers with transporting goods. Second, it expanded the size of the United States. It stretched from the Mississippi River in the east to the Rocky Mountains in the west and from the Gulf of Mexico in the south to the Canadian border in the north. Prior to France owning this land, Spain was in control of the actual ownership. Due to the fact that the Mississippi River ran down the edge of this land, Spain allowed the United States to use this river to bring supplies to New Orleans by using ships, or vessels. It was known that the location of this growing port, even today this is crucial for our Nation. It is more cost effective and time sensitive to the Mississippi River through Louisiana than to transport goods from the east
