“What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” – Unit 2 Essay
Love is an emotion many claim to experience, and who’s to say they haven’t. “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” is a short story written by Raymond Carver that emphasizes on the theme of love. A group of friends, that happen to be two couples, are sitting around a table having a drink when the conversations brings up the idea of love. Nick, the narrator and Laura are a couple, and Mel and Terri are the other couple. Mel talks the most, making great efforts to explain what love is; his wife Terri is convinced her abusive ex-boyfriend loved her. It is mind-blowing to think at one point someone can be certain they found the love of their life, their soul mate, yet now a days half of all marriages end in divorce. Most relationships don’t end on a good note; even though at one point those two people were inseparable. Mel talks about his ex-wife and the spite he has towards her now that they’re divorced, “I’m praying she’ll get stung to death by a swarm of bees” (Carver 419). The fact that someone can love someone else then completely get over him or her is crazy. It makes one really wonder if it was true love or not or if it really is possible that true love can occur more than once in a lifetime for someone. It is also crazy to think love can brainwash people, especially going back to the subject of abusive relationships. Love is such a powerful emotion that can convince someone that anyone physically, mentally, or in anyway abusing them loves him or her. Lastly, throughout this group’s discussion on love, no one brought up self-love. Loving oneself is probably the most important thing in a healthy relationship, without self love how is anyone suppose to accept love or be able to give love. Love is a mindboggling concept, it makes people think, do, and act in strange
