What Were Granted In The Monkey's Paw
It seems great to have all our wishes granted. In the story "The Monkey's Paw" wishes

were granted. However, sometimes our wishes can hurt us more than give us happiness. People

wish for many things without thinking of the consequences. The story presents the dangers of

wishing.

The story takes place in Laburnam Villa, somewhere in England, around 1902. The main

setting is inside the White family home and around the house. At the beginning of the story,

inside the White family house things were warm, cozy, relax and happy, even though outside it

was dark and stormy. As the story continues, the house becomes darker and spookier. During the

third part of the story the house becomes "steeped in shadow and silence".

that people’s lives are governed by fate and that it is dangerous to play with fate. He throws it in

the fire, but Mr. White recues it. Morris warns him to be careful with the wishes he asks for.

Morris leaves and Mr. White wishes for two hundred pounds. He does this because his son

Part II begins when Herbert leaves for work. Later during the day a representative from

his job gives the terrible news to Mr. and Mrs. White that he was “caught in the machinery”.

Herbert died while working in the factory. The representative gives Mr. White two hundred

pounds. The first wish was granted, but not in the way they expected.

In Part III sadness covers everything. Herbert was buried and several days had passed.

Mrs. White realized a second wish could be granted and she insisted and ordered Mr. White to

wish for Herbert to come back to life. Mr. White does make the wish. Nothing happened at the

moment. Later that night, someone started knocking on the door. Mrs. White was sure it

An obvious part of the story that supports the theme is when Mr. White makes his first wish. At first unsure of what to wish for, Herbert – clearly skeptical of the paw’s magical abilities – suggests to wish for 200 pounds to pay the mortgage. When the next day comes around and the two hundred pounds Mr. White wished for isn’t there, Herbert and Mrs. White are not surprised. Mr. White tells them that people often mistake coincidence for granted wishes. They then go about their day as usual, with Herbert leaving for work and Mr. and Mrs. White staying home. Hours later, a stranger comes knocking at their door to tell the Whites that their son had died in an accident at his work, and gave them 200 pounds as compensation.…

Although most of the book was superb and understandable, I have question: Who set the fire on the Wishart’s house? At first I thought it was Eliza because she said that her dad would get what he deserved and she stood emotionless as her house burned down. But then you made me question myself when you started talking about Jasper and brought up that he had previously said, “you will know when I have left.” Did Jasper or Eliza set the fire? Or am I completely off track? Did neither of them do it? Did you mean for that to be confusing and make the audience think?…

The main narrator tells the story from a third person point of view. Everything that is known is told from an all knowing voice. While reading the story Ray Bradbury makes it easy to understand that the narrator is more than the talking house. From a part in the story “It sniffed the air and scratched the kitchen door. Behind the door, the stove was making pancakes which filled the house with a rich baked odor and the scent of maple syrup. The dog frothed at the mouth, lying at the door, sniffing, its eyes turned to fire.” (Bradbury 2)This part is interesting because of the use of detail in the senses. The narrator talks to us through his senses and describes the surroundings very vividly. This narrator also gives us certain descriptions that only a person outside of the house could tell us, and since there is no one left to tell us what is happening it must be from the view of a third person…

In the story the author used both reality and fantasy ( the supernatural being that took over the house) to create a sense of eeriness. The characters spend their days doing normal things like cleaning and knitting, and acting like absolutely nothing is wrong, which is an example of a recognizable character. Everything in the house is according to the narrator, “nothing special”, which is a great example of one of the key elements, a realistic setting. While the characters are acting as nothing is wrong, a supernatural being is beginning to take over the house, and eventually completely takes over the entire house. Throughout the entire story the characters keep an uninterested tone, they always seem to be calm. The author’s use of these elements in the story helps it to be an excellent example of the Magical Realism…
