What Were Some of Apple’s Biggest Successes and Failures?
What were some of Apple’s biggest successes and failures? Describe why.

Apple Successes

Three of Apple’s biggest successes are the iPod, iTunes, and iPhone. Introduced in 2001 the iPod offered consumers and easy interface to house up to 1000 “on the go” songs. For Apple, the iPod offered a monopoly type product with high margins. The iTunes application also rolled out in 2001 and offered users and easy interface to search and download music and movies. In 2002, Apple released the Windows version of iTunes instantly revolutionizing the music delivery market. To date Apple holds the number one spot for sales of MP3 players. The introduction of the iPhone combined the functionality of a cell phone, the iPod, Apple operating system and camera. Now users had mobile entertainment in the palm of their hands.

Apple Failures

Three of Apple’s biggest failures are the Power Mac G4 Cube, Motorola Rokr, and PodNano 3rd Generation. The PowerMac G4 Cube is still known as being a revolutionary product to the industry. However, it was high priced, overheated and hardware components had a tendency to breakdown. The Rokr was a joint venture between Motorola and Apple to produce the first “iPhone” type mobile phone. Product Development was in control of Motorola. The end result was poor interface, minimal storage and low phone quality. Even Steve Jobs complained about the product. The iPod Nano; 3rd Generation was Apples attempt to make the first generation iPod less balky. Due to the balkiness of the product it grew a reputation as the”Fat Nano.” The flaws where later corrected with modernized product offerings and Apple returned the Nano to the iPod classic design.

How much of Apple’s success can be linked directly back to its culture? Why?

Jonathan Ivy is the talent behind the customer demanded Apple concepts and products. In an interview Jonathan stated, “Apple 's goal isn 't to make money. Our goal is to design and develop and bring to market good products. ” He continues, "We trust as a consequence of that, people will like them, and as another consequence we 'll make some money. But we 're really clear about what our goals are." (Waters H., 2009)

According to Ive, the key to Apples success is the culture. . The goal is to produce a small number of innovative, high quality, and marketable products. In other words, unless the commitment to innovation or design is authentic and heartfelt, rather than this month 's short-term strategy to cater to a hot trend, it will be nigh on impossible to build a true, innovation-led culture (and emulate Apple 's success). (Waters H., 2009)

During the hiring process, Ive looks for potential employees that will fit the Apple culture. Employees must be open to new ideas, be willing to accept constructive criticism and not point fingers in the face of failure. Apples culture is based on chances resulting in successes and failures.

Third, the Apple business model dominates others in the market. The aggressiveness towards new innovation does not give competitors a chance to gain grown. Finally, consumers of Apple products are drawn to the uniqueness and the experience of Apple products. Apple sticks to a few quality products offering little confusion for the customer for selecting the product that fits their needs.

The first generation iPod was one of the first mobile devices that a consumer could carry around comfortably. Before this, the bulky, disc-shaped Sony Walkmen dominated the market, requiring the user to have to go out of his way to purchase a CD and needing to change the CD in the event that he wanted to listen to a different album. Like changing a lens on a DSLR camera, it was impractical and time consuming. Therefore, Steve Jobs created the iPod, a mini personal computer that could hold music on a small device that allowed the user to switch from song to song easily, reducing the weight of the music kit and the time needed to change the song. The iPod also paved the path for the future of all mobile downloading through the creation of iTunes, a service still widely used today. The first generation iPhone was, perhaps, the most revolutionary piece of technology of the 2000s, bringing to the table a microprocessor, a touch screen, an iPod, a camera, a television, a telephone, a web browser, and a calculator all in a singular package. Before this phone, other phones used a trackpad or a stylus as means of interacting with the device. Consequently, losing or breaking the tool resulted in a useless piece of technology, in addition it the bulk of having to carry around another pen only for a phone. Steve Jobs aimed to ameliorate the situation by using a…

One of Apple’s products, the iPod, goes way back in the 1970s. Kane Kramer, a British inventor, came up with the idea of a portable music player in 1979. But it wasn’t till 2000 when the iPod team at Apple started designing and creating the actual iPod. The iPod is a portable music player that allows you to listen to thousands of songs on the go. The iPod has now developed to an iPod touch where you can still listen to music, but you can also download many different apps and games. The original iPod was launched in October of 2001. From there, Apple has created various types of iPods such as the iPod Classic, Mini, Shuffle, Nano, and now the Touch. Another one of Apple’s products is the iPhone. The iPhone concept came up in 2000 by John Casey, and Apple worker. He first called it the Telipod, which was a combination of an iPod and a telephone together. A year later Steve Jobs, the co-founder, chairman, and former chief executive officer of Apple, and Jonathan Ive, the Senior Vice President of Industrial Design at Apple, and the Apple team started creating the iPhone. The iPhone is a touch screen phone with many features and downloadable music, apps and games. The original iPhone was released in June of 2007. Since then, Apple has produced three more models of the iPhone, such as the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and the latest one, the iPhone 4. One of Apple’s latest inventions is the iPad. It was designed and created by Steve Jobs and the Apple team. The iPad is similar to a tablet. It is a touch screen computer with different features and downloadable apps and games.
