The Great Depression in 1929 was the most significant event for Germany in this time period because it affected a wide variety of people. Other significant events for Germany included Hitler being appointed as Chancellor; the work of Gustav Stresemann; the Treaty of Versailles and the spread of propaganda, however I think that the Great Depression was the most significant event in Germany because it completely broke Germany after all of the small problems it was going through such as financial problems – it was the final straw that once pulled, would change Germany drastically.
The Great Depression happened in Germany when Wall Street crashed in America and the values of shares plummeted. Unemployment was rife in Germany as many businesses, even those that were previously successful, were shutting down in this economic crisis. The main reason for the Great Depression affecting Germany so much was the agreement of the Dawes Plan, which was when the USA agreed to loan Germany some money as long as they paid it back at a later date. This was extremely bad news for Germany because not only were they very far behind on their war reparation payments, but they also had to return their loans to America. In the financial crisis of 1929, America began calling back the payments, and Germany could not afford them. Therefore, they fell even further into ‘debt’ and suffered the consequences of unimaginably high unemployment rates and lack of trade. The Great Depression was the most significant event in Germany in the given time period because it put Germany into a state of almost irreversible economic and financial turmoil. At this point in time, it did indeed look as if there was absolutely no way of returning to a safe financial position ever again for Germany as there were limited jobs and morale throughout the whole of Germany was at an all time low.
