What Would Be An Example Of Classical Conditioning
An example of classical conditioning would be a mother teaching her son to cover his mouth when coughing. If, everytime that her son sneezed, she gave him a piece of candy or other treat, he would then associate the candy with the learned behavior. Therefore, her son is chemically predisposed to always cover his mouth because he is expecting a treat. Eventually, the mother would need to ween her son off the candy until he is covering his mouth with no

Classical conditioning was discovered by Ivan Pavlov, and it involves pairing a neutral stimulus (NS) with an unconditioned stimulus (UCS) that elicits an unconditioned response (UCR). Through repeated pairings, the neutral stimulus becomes a conditioned stimulus (CS), which by itself evokes a conditioned response (CR) similar to the original UCR (as evoked by the UCS). Basically, the previously-neutral stimulus now acquires the same power as the unconditioned stimulus to…

Classical conditioning is a form of basic learning the body automatically responds to a stimulus. One stimulus takes on the properties of another. The Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov (1849-1936) is credited for discovering the basic principles of classical conditioning whilst he was studying digestion in dogs. He developed a technique for collecting dog’s salivary secretions. Pavlov (cited in Eysneck M.W 2009) noticed that the dogs would often start salivating before they were given any food or saw the feeding bucket or even when they heard the footstep of the laboratory assistant coming to feed them. Quite by accident Pavlov had discovered that the environmental control of behaviour can be changed as a result of two stimuli becoming associated with each other. These observations led to what’s now called classical conditioning.…

Classical conditioning was a theory developed by a Russian psychologist called Ivan Pavlov (1849-1936). He was working with dogs to investigate their digestive systems. The dogs were attached to a harness and Pavlov attached monitors to their stomachs and mouths so he could measure the rate of salivation. He noticed that the dog began to salivate when someone entered the room with a bowl of food, but before the dog had eaten the food. Since salivation is a reflex response, this seemed unusual. Pavlov decided that the dog was salivating because it had learned to associate the person with food. He then developed a theory. Food automatically led to the salivation response, since this response had not been learned, he called this an unconditioned response, which is a response that regularly occurs when an unconditioned stimulus is presented. As food automatically leads to this response, he called this unconditioned stimulus, which is a stimulus that regularly and consistently leads to an automatic response. Pavlov then presented food at the same time as ringing a bell (neutral stimulus), to see if the dog would learn to associate the bell with food. After several trials, the dog learned that the bell was associated with food and eventually it began to salivate only when the bell was rung and no food was presented. It therefore has learned the…

Classical conditioning is a method of conditioning in which associations are made between a natural stimulus and a learned, neutral stimulus. I consider classical conditioning to be very important because it’s such an efficient way of teaching, training or conditioning people or animals, especially children. Classical conditioning could be used for psychological distress like phobias. For example, Mary cover jones put a child with a fear of rabbits in a room with the rabbit far way. Then she gave him his favorite food and put the rabbit closer. Associating the pleasure of food with the feared object made him no longer scared of rabbits. This applies to my life because my mom used this method when she raised me. I was scared of riding my bike because I fell off it once. So every time I attempted pedaling she would give me a dollar. Finally she put 5 dollars all way down the street and told me to bike there and get it; making me lose my phobia of bikes.…

Classical conditioning and operant conditioning are learning styles associated with human behavior. According to Kowalski and Westen, (2011) “Classical conditioning is a procedure by which a previously neutral stimulus comes to elicit a response after it is paired with a stimulus that automatically elicits that response” (Kowalski & Westen, 2011, p. 164). Ivan Pavlov, a Russian physiologist studied the digestive system of a canine, when he came across the discovery of classical conditioning (Kowalski & Westen, 2011). In this learning experiment, he noticed that the canine salivated at the sign of food (Kowalski & Westen, 2011). The canine engaged in salivating when the food was present by a ringing of a bell (Kowalski & Westen, 2011). This experiment led to the canine salivating at the ringing of the bell even if there were no foods present (Kowalski & Westen, 2011). Psychologists refer to this as classical conditioning (Kowalski & Westen, 2011, p. 164). Counter…

The idea of classical condition is one of the most notable learning techniques because it involves a stimulus rewarded for a certain response. Naturally, animals and human have unconditioned stimulus that triggers an unconditioned response. The most common connection is the correlation between food and salivation. Food naturally draws organism to it in order to satisfy a drive created by hunger to acquire homeostasis. A response is created because of the organism’s reaction to food, which is usually salivation. Classical conditioning is considered an effective way to train an organism to learn habits not naturally associated with certain unconditioned stimulus. This creates a conditioned stimulus. The once unconditioned response is now conditioned to respond to the conditioned stimulus, which is called a conditioned stimulus. An example of conditioned stimulus and response is the example of associating the school bell with food. Children are hungry by nature, but when the school bell is added, the children are reinforced to associate the school bell with lunchtime. Classical…

By definition, classical conditioning refers to conditioning in which the conditioned stimulus is paired with and precedes the unconditioned stimulus until the conditioned stimulus alone is sufficient to elicit the response (Merriam-Webster, 2013). As a general concept, classical conditioning assists organisms in learning which stimuli signals are conducive to survival and which stimuli signals are detrimental to survival (Olson & Hergenhahn, 2009). As an example imagine that you decide to attend a road trip. You decide to have a fruit snack while traveling. The twisting and turning in your travels causes motion sickness and creates nausea. This leads to nausea every time you come in contact with a fruit snack, which leads to an avoidance of fruit snacks. This is a form of classical conditioning. Classical conditioning has been debatable in the science of psychology for years. It is the intension of this paper to describe, explore, analyze, and summarize the theory of classical conditioning. In this quest, the author also intends to hypothetically apply the theory of classical conditioning, including charts and explanations.…

The phenomenon studied by Pavlov is an interesting one to consider. (Myers, 2010) Trying to choose a personal experience that reflects classical conditioning was difficult. There were many obvious choices, so it took a while to choose one. When I was a little girl I attended a funeral with my mother. One of the hymns played at the funeral was “In the Garden”. Being a funeral, it was a very sad event and there were many tears. Afterward, my mother said to me, “I want that song played at my funeral”. To this day I cannot hear that song without tears coming to my eyes. I hear it and imagine my mother’s funeral.…

The use of classical conditioning in advertising has long been used as a means for those who sell products and services to influence consumers to purchase from them instead of competitors. Classical conditioning involves four main components: unconditioned stimulus (UCS), the unconditioned response (UCR), the conditioned stimulus (CS), and the conditioned response (CR). In classical conditioning there is an association which is developed between the unconditioned stimulus and the conditioned stimulus that prompts the conditioned response. If we use the famous experiment carried out by the founder of classical conditioning, Ivan Pavlov, we find that the UCS would be food in the dog's mouth, the UCR would be salivation, the CS would be the bell's tone, and the salvation associated with the bell's tone is the CR.…

Classical conditioning is an association between two stimuli; It is what proceeds the response. The two stimuli in my experiment was the ringing of the bell and the on and off of the light switch performed in a dark room. During my experiment I rang the bell and then immediately turned off the lights. I remained in the dark for fifteen seconds then turned the light back on. I left the light on for fifteen seconds, and would monitor my pupils in the mirror then ring the bell and would simultaneously turned off the light again. After doing this several times, I rang the bell one last time but did not turn off the lights. Then I immediately looked into the mirror to monitor my pupils. I noticed that the pupils dilated. The unconditional response (UR) is that my pupils would dilate when the room became dark which I had no control. The conditioned response (CR) is that the bell stimulated the pupils to dilate. Prier to this time, the ringing of the bell had no effect on the dilation of my pupils. Therefore, the classical conditioning programmed my pupils to dilate upon the ringing of the bell and controlling the light stimuli.…

The behavior I have is a fear of flying. This behavior developed when I was younger on an international flight back to the U.S., there was a bad storm and the turbulence was really bad and the plane felt like it was dropping out of the sky. Also there was another instance where I was flying through the mountains in a propeller plane. These particular planes do not fly as high as say a Boeing 757 or a jet, therefore you feel every single wind gust and bump. As the plane was descending into our destination the plane would ever so often drop to where we were bouncing out of our seats. Since those two incidents I have since flown again, however I get anxiety as we are ascending and once above the clouds I feel a sense of safety and no longer feel anxious or fear the plane is going to crash.…

Classical conditioning is a phenomenon in which two stimuli are associated, creating a reflex response. There are three examples of classical conditioning. My first example is my boyfriend, he wears a certain type of cologne that I am used to smelling when I am around him. Now whenever I smell that scent I get happy. The cologne is a unconditioned stimulus and the reaction is a unconditioned response. Secondly, whenever I got surgery I was given pain killers after which made me sick. Even today when someone mentions pain killers or that kind of medicine I get sick. M last example for classical conditioning is my fear of flies. On television there was a show on how flies puke on everything they land on. Now whenever I am around flies I get scared and freak-out, because I don't want them on me.…

Classical conditioning was one form of simple association. Pavlov made it clear during experiments that when a subject is given a stimulus and is then either punished or rewarded, the subject learns to associate the reward or punishment with that particular stimulus. Pavlov used hungry dogs that would begin to salivate when a tone was played. This happened because the dogs were always fed immediately after hearing the tone. This is classical conditioning.…
