Many people say that George’s murderous actions in the end of the book, Of Mice and Men, could have been avoided. However, George’s actions couldn’t have been avoided for several reasons. For example, Lennie would just keep making the same mistakes and keep ruining their chances of obtaining their dream. Curly also told George to follow and didn’t allow George to go find Lennie to help him. Also, Lennie’s jail experience wouldn’t be a good one. George, also, doesn’t murder Lennie with hate. These are some of the reasons that George’s murder couldn’t have been avoided.…

George never dwelled on things too much, whether they were big or small. In New Orleans he was supposed to catch a boat to India but he missed it. He didn't care too much, he just went back to Texas and moved on with his life even though he missed a big opportunity to see more of the world. In George's time, racism was bad, and he wasn't treated equally to a white man. On his way to Cleveland George found out that he had gotten cheated out of his money when buying train tickets in Marshall, the man gave him a one way ticket instead of a round trip. George could have retaliated, but he didn't worry too much because he knew that there wasn't a thing he could do about it. He worked around the situation. When George's daughter got cancer, he was saving money to build a new house, but she needed help with paying for the cancer treatment so that's what the money went for. Unfortunately his daughter died. George could have dwelled on the situation and thought about what else he could have done with his savings, but he didn't regret any of it. Worrying about things only takes the joy out of life and makes you overthink. George did not worry about things, or have regrets and that helped make his life a little more…

One may want to say that what George did, that is shooting Lennie, was either the right or wrong decision. To put it into such a black and white decision, right or wrong, good or bad, compassion or unjustification, cannot fully describe the choice that George made. You cannot truly say if what he did was right or not, but simply that he had to. What George did was something that his moral compass told him must be done. How can you say that they would have gotten away if George had done otherwise, that they would have escaped and made it to another ranch and continued on with their lives. Chances are they would not get away, chances are Lennie would have died either way, creating a situation even more cataclysmic on Georges…

The final scene between George and Lennie is suffused with sadness, even though Lennie retains his blissful ignorance until the end. To reassure Lennie, George forces himself through their habitual interaction one last time. He claims that he is angry, then assures him that all is forgiven and recites the story of their farm. For George, this final description of life with Lennie, of the farm and the changes it would have brought about, is a surrender of his dreams. The vision of the farm recedes, and George realizes that all of his talk and plans have amounted to nothing. He is exactly the kind of man he tried to convince himself he was not, just one among a legion of migrant workers who will never be able to afford more than the occasional prostitute and shot of liquor. Without Lennie, George relinquishes his hope for a different life. Lennie was the only thing that distinguished his life from the lives of other men and gave him a special sense of purpose. With Lennie gone, these hopes cannot be sustained. The grim note on which the story closes suggests that dreams have no place in a world filled with such injustice and…

His life revolved around finding work, working, and running from the mischief Lennie created. George wanted nothing more than to live simply and have no worries, but he could never accomplish it. On page 7, George says “I could get along so easy and so nice if I didn’t have you on my tail. I could live so easy and maybe have a girl”. This revealed to the reader George’s true feelings, and that his ambitions in life were not anything too extreme. He knew Lennie was a bit of a burden, but he needed him. For him, it was about being in charge and not having to listen to someone else for once. George faced many obstacles and was not able to make his dream a reality because of what life handed…

Of mice and men leaves me wondering at the conclusion because I feel as if the ending would have turned out a lot different if George wouldn’t have shot Lennie in the back of the head. I believe that if George wouldn’t have killed him, they would have got their own ranch and George would have got to raise the bunnies and been able to pet them like he talked about in the novel.…
