What I Think It Means to Be a Counselor
February 18, 2013 Counseling means to help someone else through a situation or problem that they cannot solve alone. Counselors are good to have to help you with different problems that you may encounter. If you are having marital problems and seek help you would want someone who would listen to your problems and give sound advice. Counselors have to be good listeners and caring people. They need to be qualified to give advice on what to do because the person whom they are giving advice to most likely will do what they are being told. Therefore, they need to be knowledgeable of what they are talking about. Oftentimes, counselors will encounter a talkative client. Talking usually helps anyone to get whatever burdens that they are dealing with off of their chest without having to keep it bottled up inside. Counseling is definitely a listening profession. Counselors should be helping hands. They offer lots of advice daily to all different type of clients with different cultural backgrounds. Sometimes the counselor is all a person might have to go to let off steam or to vent to. I consider myself a good listener, but not qualified to give advice. However, I can still offer my opinion depending on what the subject might be. I always try to put myself in that person shoes and try to be empathetic about whatever their situation might be. I have an admiration for counselors as they have a big role to play in helping shape people’s lives and making sure they are giving good sound advice to improve their situations. They should be paid highly for the work they do and they all should have a passion for the job. Counselors are faced with lots of mental and psychological issues depending on the type of certification they have or their specialty. Their jobs can become very emotional and mental at times after having to listen to different problems of people of all different type of backgrounds. They should
