Throughout Cider House Rules, I tried to identify multiple issues of the story and pitfalls of my critical thinking. Once I pulled myself away from being enveloped in the plot, I noticed how many different issues were present in the film. The topic of abortion has been touched on by a few of my classmates already, so I wanted to address another issue that stood out to me. In Cider House Rules, the relationship between Candy and Homer drew an unusual emotion out of me. I wanted them to be together at some points, but I also expressed the absolutist viewpoint that I hold on the topic of cheating and it made me pinpoint an issue of cause and effect. Why did Candy fall in love with Homer while she was with Wally? Was it because Wally was gone or did she actually have overwhelming feelings for Homer that were more than what she held for Wally? Initially, I believed that she was only in love with Homer and that she would break it off with Wally when he returned. The primary reason behind this opinion was the hasty conclusion I made after Candy and Homer had made love. I concluded that because they had made love multiple times that Candy was in love with Homer unconditionally and only loved him. I also had the error of perspective known as either/ or when I thought this. I felt that Candy could either love Homer or Wally and not both, and because she had appeared to love Homer so much she could not love Wally anymore. Finally, I had a biased consideration of the evidence because I am so opposed to the concept of cheating. I was very biased against a relationship behind Wally’s back so I wanted to believe that Candy would break it off and be truthful with him. While it is arguable that multiple loves can occur at one time and can be suggested by evidence such as polygamist relationships, my egocentrism made me believe that I held the correct opinion on love. It is evident that I commit many pitfalls of critical thinking as a thinker just beginning to understand them, but I…

Cummings’ definitely made a name for himself through his achievements. In 1911, the first published writing of E.E Cummings was added into “Harvard Monthly.” Soon after, in 1912, Cummings earned an M.A at Harvard, in English and Classical Studies. He also featured in “Eight Harvard Poets” where eight of his poems were published. Already popular, five years after returning from French detention, his manuscript for “The Enormous Room” was published. This brought him even more fame, due to…

    Rough.

It starts out rough at first, a struggle, fighting the thing that is ultimately supposed to help you, you’re blinded by a clear force of nature, and then, all of a sudden, everything becomes simple. You’re gliding on top of what once held you down; you’ve conquered your oppressor. You’re riding the “wave” of life, controlling everywhere you go, you’re on top of the world! But the only problem with being at the top of the world is that there is only one way left to go. Down. You can never tell what the “wave” might throw you next, maybe it will be something easy, or fun, some minor bump you can turn into the jump you’ve been waiting for so you can finally do that perfect 360, or maybe it’s a rogue set of waves from hell that end with you face down in the water, sore and in need of some serious chiropractic assistance. And we all get those rogue waves when we’re at our finest moment, but when that wave comes and knocks you over, the only thing you can do is get back up on it, time, and time again, and let the wave know that you will never let anything stop you from trying to do what you need to do. The word “euthanasia” comes from combining two greek words: “Eu” meaning “good”, and “thanatos” meaning “death”. So euthanasia actually means “good death.” The idea is that a death is good if it is painless. Now an important distinction must be made: not all painless deaths are euthanasia. Only those deaths in which an individual directly causes the death of another as a means of eliminating that other person 's pain are euthanasia. For example, if a doctor lethally injects a paraplegic who has many years to live but asks to be put to death because he can’t stand the psychological distress of not having his full mobility--that’s a case of euthanasia. However, a case of someone who dies normally from a disease (for example, from cancer) while under sedation (so that this person does not feel pain) is not euthanasia.…

WW1 increased a rapid change towards the movement of limiting immigration in 1918. This was not caused through any actions of the immigrants, but rather through speculated fear and suspicion which lead to patriotism degenerating into an ugly xenophobia. Many Americans saw the war distinctly as an European problem, causing the United States to attempt to shield itself from the influences that had helped create the war. With the war revealing many immigrants to still have tentative sympathies for their mother country, the US hoped to keep out dangerous radicals and communists who might poison the minds of millions of Europeans already in North America by restricting limitations. Soon enough, life for foreign born immigrants was not an easy one as hostilities rose and many Americans were deeply resentful towards anything foreign. After 1918, many Americans began to look upon the whole conflict of the war and regretted that their country had become involved, this lead isolationism playing a key counterpart in a determination to curb immigration and preserve old American stock ethically as seen by the refusal of The Senate to ratify the Treaty of Versailles which consequently, lead to the refusal to make the USA a member of the league of nations even though America had been the key stone towards this. The hostility shown towards many immigrants was due to many reasons such as; The Red Scare, Social Fears, Religious Fears, World War One, Anti-immigrant feeling and Immigration Laws.…
