Should You Install A Wheelchair Ramp To Your Front Door?

Finding out you are paralyzed is always shocking news. Your life will never be the same again, but there are some things you can do to help with this major adjustment. An occupational therapist will be very valuable in helping you to make the adjustment.

You will probably be spending lots of time in your wheelchair, which will now become your means of mobility. You will have to make a number of modifications to your home so you can get around easily and safely. One of the main things that will help to this end is widening your doorways and hallways if possible. A wheelchair ramp is another helpful alteration you can make when you need to get into and out of your home on your own.

Anyone who relies on a wheelchair for mobility knows how important the casters are for stability, surface control and comfort. The type of surface that a wheelchair is most often used on will dictate which wheelchair casters are best suited for the chair. Smaller casters function well on indoor and soft surfaces, while they also make turning and rotating easier. The larger casters are generally used for harder, uneven surfaces. Most casters are located on the front of a wheelchair, but they may also be located on the rear of chairs if the wheelchair has centrally positioned drive wheels.…

The likelihood of an injury from this hazard is high as people could trip over it, maybe rushing to an emergency and the chair is blocking the way and causing a risk to staff and patients. The severity of injury is that someone could break/fracture a bone depending on how hard the fall is or the age/health of the patient. However we understand that some people need to be transported by wheelchairs as they cannot walk from a leg injury or they may just not be able to walk very far from where they were coming from. A porter may have left the wheelchair just in case an emergency occurred and we needed to transport someone quickly to a place who couldn’t walk/ walk far. The wheelchair could also be a hazard to children who decide to play on them as the brakes may not be on which would cause the wheelchair to move whilst a child was on it. This could mean that a child would end up falling and the wheelchair falling over causing another risk from the wheelchair being left…

The therapist I observed gave the patient a thorough understanding and demonstration of the exercises being asked. The Occupational Therapist chose certain exercises to help with the patient’s grip, strength, and range of motion. The therapist gave tips on self-care skills to help the patient with putting on articles of clothing and also helped to keep the patient’s morale high. With the therapist’s calming approach and easy to talk to attitude it was an obvious choice of why the patient requested to work the…

The day is over, and just in time. I am extremely exhausted from all of the plowing out in the summer’s heat. It’s getting to me and I know it is unfair that my family and I must endure this type of work and lifestyle. I can’t make enough money to support us but I have no choice but to keep this job. I can’t find any place else willing to hire me so if I leave this place I am subject to a fine of up to fifty dollars as well as up to ten days in jail. That will leave me in a worse situation than I am in now. I find it especially cruel that I am unable to leave my job at anytime I choose. If I do so, the boss is able to keep the money I have earned for that year and I receive nothing. I don’t feel like a freedman, I feel like the slave that I was before.…

Occupational therapy was born in 1917 with the founding of The National Society for the Promotion of Occupational Therapy. The five founders held a belief that occupation was a valuable therapeutic tool, but also knew scientific evidence would push occupational therapy (OT) to be a respected field (Schwartz, 2003). Much has changed in OT in the last hundred years, but OT still stands strong on two points, occupation based interventions and evidence based practice. With the high demand for evidence based practice comes the need for research and highly skilled therapists who can put research into practice. OT moved from a bachelor’s degree to a master’s degree to ensure graduates had a proper education.…
