These books are: Harry Potter by J.K Rowling, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger, The Giver by Lois Lowry, Killing Mr.Griffen by Lois Duncan, Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson, When Dad Killed Mom by Julius Lester, The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, The Joy of Gay Sex by Dr. Charles Silverstein, Goosebumps by R.L Stine. The books Harry Potter by J.K Rowling and Goosebumps by R.L Stine both are very graphic and descriptive in their writing and they both are absurd non-fiction that go against all religions. Killing Mr.Griffen by Lois Duncan, When Dad Killed Mom by Julius Lester, The Giver by Lois Lowry, Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson all talk about tragic death to innocent people. Of mice and men is a very unique book that has all the elements to get banned such as betrayal, abuse, killing, rape, mental illness. Our constitution gives us the right under the First Amendment to the Freedom of Speech. This seems like a fairly straight forward right, but what many don’t know is that the Constitution only guarantees our right to freedom of speech against abridgement by government, federal or state. (Hudgens v. National Labor Relations Board, 424 U.S. 507 Lexis).…

Beatty explains that the reason why books are banned is to keep everyone happy. Books grew to be considered bad because of “technology, mass exploitation, and minority pressure.” People were too impatient to read, no one wanted to be offended by anything or offend anyone else, and the thought and knowledge brought on by books made people different, and no one wanted to think they weren’t intelligent The world began to move quicker. People were impatient, and didn’t want to “waste” time reading; they preferred to have “the gag, the snap ending.” As people began to move quicker, they had less time to think deeply. People began to be more lazy, and didn’t want any more knowledge than they thought they needed. The population of the world grew,…

To Kill a Mockingbird, The Catcher in the Rye, and The Scarlet Letter are classic novels that demonstrate sex, profanity, and racism, but what sets these books apart from the rest is the classy way they introduce ideas of sin. Teens of the 21st century are indulging more and more into inappropriate novels. Students are going to school where they are commanded to read books with mindful tactics, sexual content, and vulgar language. We need to help restore youths moral values, and to achieve this we should prohibit certain books from being read and reintroduce the classics alongside new books presenting strong values. Banning books is valid because we may be using books to enhance our children's knowledge, however, books often contain content…

The other reason that this book should be banned was going against religious beliefs. This statement did not make sense to me. I feel as if this book stays within the guidelines of religion, for the fact that they never stated anything that even related to religion. So, maybe the violence and the language were a little bit rough, but for the sake of religious background, this book should not be banned.…

For me personally, books should not be banned because it is basically censoring someone else's art. Writers or authors have the right to publish whatever they want. They are just books. People should not get all worked up over a piece of literature. Especially schools. Schools across the country in different time periods banned the novel for the reasons being that it is too vulgar, sexual, and violent for kids to read. (“Banned Book: The Catcher in the Rye”)…

Not all books that are banned should be but there are some that I see good reasoning for why it has been banned. In my opinion the book I read shouldn’t be banned, but I do see why some readers feel that it should, in the book there is some violence that might be disturbing to a young reader. Also to some young readers they may find the book to be scary. Even with these other points I am still against banning this book and many other books. I encourage anyone who dislikes a book or finds it inappropriate to think about their decision before challenging or banning a…

Banning Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins has good intentions—protecting children; however, children/teenagers should be trusted to make their own decisions about what they read. Books are usually challenged or banned to protect others, for example; violence, sexually explicit or offensive language. Catching fire is said to be challenged because of its violence, anti-ethnic, anti-family, insensitivity, and offensive language. The Hunger Games series was on the 2010 challenged books lists.…

The Catcher in the Rye. The Scarlet Letter. Huckleberry Finn. Harry Potter. The Diary of Anne Frank. Animal Farm. To Kill a Mockingbird. The Da Vinci Code. The Grapes of Wrath. These literary classics have been vital to the education of many, especially children and adolescents (Banned Books). These great novels both teach important values and educate children about world affairs and classic themes. Unfortunately, each of these novels has been banned at one point in time. In a country where freedom is so adamantly advocated, it is a wonder that an issue like censorship would even come up, that such a controversy would sink its claws into the minds of states’ boards of education across the nation. Censorship is a needless restriction placed on developing minds that need the morals and values that banned books can give.…

Some nights I dream about Michael. He’s coming home from college for christmas break and he’s brought a girl with him. Our family is sitting at the dinner table and he’s giving my sister’s new boyfriend a hard time. He’s sitting in the audience, whooping and hollering as I walk across the stage and receive my diploma. Other times, he’s standing in a waiting room, introducing my sisters and me to his little girl. I dream about all of the moments my family and I never got to have with him and my heart breaks every single time. Michael has been gone for almost 16 years and yet he is still with me every day. I dream about him and what could have been; what should have been. Michael’s death teaches me something new almost every day.
