When I Came To America
I came to America about 13 years ago from Sri Lanka and I’ve had experiences in this country that I think are very unique. Both of my parents worked so hard to bring my brother and I to America, because they knew that if we wanted the best future we’d have to be here. I never truly realized the impact America has had on me and my family. I come from an Indian/Sri Lankan background and being able to see so much acceptance of our culture here is truly amazing. Although I have had experiences with racism here, I think these last 2 years have made a huge impact on diversity and truly accepting that everyone is equal.
It’s interesting to see that so many young people are promoting equality for all races and are making a voice for themselves in

It’s amazing to see how much America is changing and bringing awareness to important things in society. I have family in Sri Lanka and Canada that think America is a “white” country and I think the steps the younger community especially are taking will hopefully make them better understand that this country is for everyone.
If anyone who’s young is reading this, I want you to know that you can do anything. Go out and March and speak up for what you think is right. You are not too young, you have a voice and you have a power. It doesn’t matter if your parents or your peers don’t agree, find that inner passion and go for it.
Being from an Indian/Sri Lankan family, I have a ton of cultural stereotypes thrown at me. My brother and I had 3 job options when we were young: A lawyer, a doctor, or an engineer. My brother chose to be an engineer and I chose to do what I want. It was hard for my parents to understand that I’m a different person and that I don’t care about the salary I make or the reputation my job has. If America gives me the choice to go to college and study what I want and have a career in what I want, then why would I choose a job I hate every day.I’m choosing to do what I’m passionate and what God has called me to do, not what my parents want. I think being from a different county has given me a very different and unique look on what America is

Though I was raised in southern California, I chose to raise my family in a small city in a rural eastern state. Unlike many people in my adopted home state, I chose to live here, and that has made me appreciate the fulfillment that my city and State provide. I’m often asked why I made that choice, and the answer I give is simple: I wanted fulfillment. Places like California will be just fine. But places like West Virginia need smart people willing to make a difference. After finishing law school and my judicial clerkships, I could have worked anywhere. But I wanted more than a big paycheck. I realized that West Virginia is a place where I can make a difference just by choosing to raise my family here. And, selfishly, I derive enormous professional satisfaction seeing my efforts improve the way people…

The United States of America has become a powerful country that honors freedom and courage. Our country has overcome racial discrimination, the freedom to vote despite gender, to speak freely, endured wars, economic strikes, technological advances and stockmarket plummits. However, America cannot be perfect, nor can any country be. It is up to the citizens of America to set a good example and push our country as close to perfect as we can. We can start by acknowledging our nation’s issues that are categorized as poverty, hunger, disease, corruption, ignorance of race and sexuality and police brutality.…

America as many may know, is a country bounded by the label of “the melting pot.” This title once described the country to a T. Over time, things have changed, the overall attitude of America has shifted. Now-a-days you would only think this from an outside perspective.” In the case of the African Americans has the melting pot failed to bring a minority into the full stream of American life,” (Kennedy, 27). Kennedy believed that discrimination was one of the biggest flaws in the failure of the melting pot, and it is not only African Americans, but it is other races too. We may be called united, but are we really?…

Being a millennial baby, I think that the election of President Barack Obama has had the greatest impact on the millennial generation, when he was inaugurated on January 20, 2009; everyone knew that everything would change. With President Obama being the first African America President, it gave some people a dosage of confidence, so to speak. I remember my father telling me that President Obama was elected. Even then, I thought to myself, I could do anything I wanted and be anything I wanted. That wasn’t quite the case because of one little problem: racism. Racism has been there ever since I can remember, just because of someone’s skin tone. Even at my school, I feel different because I am the only Indian in my class. The majority are Caucasians.…

There so many reasons for me to feel proud to be an American today. The fact that we can get a job regardless whether or not we come from the highest social class or the color of our skin, is unimaginable in other countries. We can marry who we want, and we can believe in what we want without fear of any kind. It’s taken a long time to get…

Years of terror and war brought Americans of all ethnicities to believed that a time for change had come; change came in the form of two minorities who had the ability and desire to revitalize a country that had been burdened with doubt and financial frailty.
