2nd week of sim lab, we are given a scenario for the day. I was to play the role of family member, whose husband is admitted as a result of severe knife like epigastric pain on the RUQ. Diagnostic test shows pancreatitis. Begin a family member I was so worry about what going on with my husband, I kept asking the nurses to tell me what was going. The nurse did not communicating with me effectively, is like I was left out entirely. Even when the doctor walked in I was expecting the nurses to at least introduce me to the doctor or for the doctor to acknowledge my presence there, but none of this happen, instead they ignored my presence and continued doing their job. I learn a lot through simulation, As a nurse we need to know that communicating…
The article “Medical Technology and Ethical Issues” by William E. Thompson and Joseph V. Hickey discusses the use of some technology in the medical field. Throughout this passage the authors’ goal is to inform the reader about how programs like RIP can be a benefit medical situations and employees. In the beginning of the article the authors create an urgent, worried tone by describing the scene of a patient arriving to the hospital in an ambulance; this shows the importance of situations like this, which is why the authors describe the quick results of some medical technologies as a positive. After describing the scene the authors use mostly a flat tone to describe the impact of these programs.…
There are many drastic differences between the extremely respectable communication of the magnanimous Patch Adams and the almost cataclysmic communication of the normal doctoral staff of the respected medical school, the mental hospital, and the regular hospital that the medical students were trained at. These two different ways of communicating were considerably different in their intentions, their every day morals and values, and even their exceptionally diverse ways of treating patients.…

Therefore, nurses provide physical and psychological support before and after the surgery. As enforced in the simulation, the patient stoma must be inspected regularly. Color change and excessive bleeding must be communicated to the primary care provider. I will provide effective patient education and encourage the patient to participate in care. In addition, helping the patient to cope with depression by listening, explaining and be available and supportive is very important. Overall, the Mr. Hayes case was a great experience that will help me interact with real…
He wanted to see if nurses would follow orders given by an authority figure (Doctor) when the orders are given over the phone and would be breaking regulations. To study obedience in a real life setting.…
The author goes on to talk about how things are done when students are going through medical school they are asked to make a note of how their patients appear (The Clothes That Make the Doctor, 2014). She explains how things use to be in the past when doctors wore white lab coats and how nurses wore white dresses and hats. Unfortunately, things have changed a lot in health care in the last sixteen years and physicians and nurses are not as they use to appear. The author explains how everyone has a different opinion on what exactly a professional dresses like and comes to a point expressing how a doctor may dress more casual to not make a very obvious difference between patient and physician. That if one was more dressed casual a patient would feel less anxious and more willing to have an open…
In the chapter titled Jacob, Paiva responded to a call where a boy had been hit by a vehicle and severely injured. One of the civilians who was helping with the medical response had been in a class taught by Paiva the year prior. Despite having previous experience with the paramedic and knowing her qualifications, the civilian still hesitated to follow their instructions because it conflicted with what she had been told previously. Paiva responded very well to this stressor by explaining very logically what steps needed to be taken in order to give the boy the treatment that he needed. On top of this, paramedics were also responding to the call next to the highway which was much noisier and busier than the majority of the calls that they respond to. The extra noise was just another distraction that was added while paramedics attempted to focus and execute their job.…
Burns discusses in depth the flaw of psychology but exploring society's in medical experts and specialists in 'public places'. 'public places' is about a person who sustains a neck injury after constantly turning around. "the specialist says... i don't like the tablets he's given me... they make me feel quite peculiar." The irony that medicine given to a patient could cause discomfort emphasises the flaw of medicine. "of course i do as he says" This demonstrates and criticises society's trust in medicine despite its obvious flaws. "it may sound crazy but i've read books about this sort of thing... the experts call them thought forms." Again, the composer criticises society's trust in medical experts and through the use of assonance, exposes society's need to label.…
Simulation was very effective given the environment that it was conducted in was practical enough and exposed the student to real life situation with patients (Dreifuerst, 2009). The simulation method was also effective since it offered a diverse learning opportunity that is not offered in class and also helped the student know the importance of communicating and engaging the patient. The simulation gave the student an opportunity to learn…
The biomedical explanation of mental illness is widely promoted in society to reduce stigma by promoting the biological causes of mental diseases which can be treated with pharmaceutical interventions, however increasing research has found that this explanation of mental illness is not only failing, but stigma is in fact worsening. The1950’s saw the introduction of a number of pharmaceutical treatments that seemed to reduce the effects of mental illness. The foundations of the biomedical parigdam today relies on researchers advances in neurobiology combined with pharmaceutical treatments and their ability to address the physiological aspects of mental illness, whilst ignoring the psychosocial explanations of mental illness. However in ignoring the psychosocial model are we in fact ignoring an important element of reducing stigma. Given the increase in the number of pharmaceutical treatments being prescribed, the growing number of people being diagnosed with mental illness and the increasing research demonstrating an increase in social stigma at all levels, it is becoming more important to improve communication and education to ensure improved outcomes for those suffering mental illness and…
As Ms. Smith, a Registered Nurse with ten years experience in the orthopedic unit, entered the floor, she was alarmed to see that one of her coworkers had called in sick. In this 30-bed unit, the typical staff to patient ratio was 1:9 or 1:10, a ratio borne out of necessity due to funding cuts and decreases in Medicare reimbursement, as well as shortages in the pool of nurses. Ms Smith knew right then it was going to be a long stressful night because not only did she have to take care of her normal ten patients she would now have to take on about fifteen, five more than normal. Ms. Smith, after reviewing patient information, walked toward the room of her first patient on this night, an elderly gentleman recovering from a hip replacement earlier that day. Although it was after 11:00 PM, a time when most patients would be sleeping, five of her patients had received prosthetic joints that day and required additional care, particularly related to pain management. While talking with the first patient, Ms. Smith could…

I initially presumed that taking medical history and performing physical assessment on standardized patients during simulation would be easy tasks to complete. I have been exposed to a similar simulation before and have first-hand experience and knowledge about history and physical assessment. I learned a great deal about my interaction with the standardized patients, which could reflect my connection with my real patients at work.…
It would be a privilege to have the opportunity of being in a recognized program such as National Honors Society. In my life long experiences as a student, I have met with multiple challenges in my path to defying all the stereotypes concerning Latino students. I have the characteristics of a student with “Scholarship, Service, leadership & Character.”…
