“When Volunteerism Isn’t Noble” What is volunteering? In my beliefs, volunteering is an activity that involves spending time and benefits someone else. In the passage, “When Volunteerism Isn’t Noble,” by Steirer, believes that volunteer is something people should do on their own will. The author is against the policy of high school students having to reach a certain amount of community services hours to receive a diploma in order to graduate. In high school, Steirer refused to comply with her high school’s rules about volunteering for graduation, because she believes that if doing community service were mandatory, it would not be called volunteering? Ironically, Steirer did volunteer during her high school years, but she never submitted her hours to school because her own beliefs and was never able to receive her diploma. I agree with Steier’s idea, but I do not support what her decision on risking her future. I not only believe our future is the most important thing but also that students should volunteer on their own will, not just because they want to graduate. I would rather do hours and hours of community service than meeting the graduation requirement. This way I can show that I do not do the hours just to graduate; I do them because I actually want to help people and want to do something for my community. At the end of my senior year, I had almost 60 hours of community service. There was a mandatory volunteering even for all the seniors. My friends and I volunteered the most difficult one out of the choices. We have to travel up to the mountains to teach aboriginal (Taiwanese) children English and some American cultures. It was a great pleasure to spend time with the children. My friends and I had taught them different things from American culture, and they also taught us things we had never seen. After a week of volunteering on the mountain, I ended up graduating with 70 hours of community service. I was really happy with the result. I also have realized that some people who traveled up to the mountain just because they need community service hours.
Why not keep the mandatory volunteering? When I was on the mountain teaching the children, I realized a lot of the children there are really naive, and they do not really know what is happening around the world due to lack of technology resources. This was our responsibility to help them with what they needed. We live in a wealthy family, and we do not understand how the other sides of people are living. I believe mandatory volunteering is a way to get us involve into the community. Also, we actually help people who needed help, and understand them. I always believe that doing these services are something we should do in order to return to the community. If I did so much for my community, why not take credit from? Sometimes we can actually learn things when we volunteering. However; I believe that it is not a bad idea for high schools to require a certain amount of volunteer time to be completed before graduation. Not only will get students involved into their community but also will benefit people who needed it. I agree with Steirer’s idea and I support her believes on volunteering shouldn't be mandatory. Therefore, the act of volunteering should come from within.

In Dave Egger text “Serve or Fail”, argues that college students should be required to volunteer in community service. Egger explains that college is too short to sit back and waste their time with no commitments to any activities in the community. In his college days, Egger became a professional at various sports, but later in life; he wonders about the impact he could have done for his community instead wasting time playing sports. He also argues that volunteer hours can be counted as credits not just for the requirement. He supports his argument by showing the statistics of how many hours that students could do in exchange for one class credit. Students can spend times outside of class and they might learn more in…

Volunteering for service hours changed my outlook on life. I worked with the Hydrocephalus Association in both eleventh and twelfth grade. The Hydrocephalus Association focuses on three things community, clarity, and cure. Hydrocephalus is a condition defined by an abnormal, excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain. Some people with this condition can live a normal life being unnoticeable while other have difficulties. The association works on awareness to find a cure, clarity in helping families further understand the condition, and a community which will always be supportive. Service hours can sometimes be a hassle but once I started volunteering with that association it became fun because I was…

Whether it be helping with school decorations, planting trees in the garden, or cleaning up garbage, doing service allows me to both aid my community and to know exactly how I am aiding it. It is for this reason that I enjoy community service. Often, I will sign up to help with small, individual community events. For example, a few weeks ago, I allocated six hours to help set up and operate various activities at the River Hill Community Health Fair. I am also a member of the American Red Cross, and frequently help blood donors at the Columbia Red Cross Blood Donor Center. Whether it be helping the community learn more about health, or helping facilitate blood donations to the needy, I know exactly how I help in community…

Donating, giving, and sharing are three related values that the majority of households in America all claim to practice and believe in. If this is true, then why is it so often that charities are underfunded? The problem is that many people seek happiness for themselves over the happiness of others. I believe that this is natural in human beings. When we are already so busy taking care of ourselves, I think we forget that other people could use a hand as well. Another underlying factor may be that many of us are not raised around charity. Instead of volunteering at shelters, America’s youth is often found at sports practices or at home fidgeting with technology, and until recently, I was no different.…

In “Serve or Fail,” Dave Eggers dissatisfies the phenomenon that although college students have too much leisure, they are not willing to give a few hours doing community services. Eggers suggests that colleges should consider instituting a service requirement for graduation, and colleges are best-poised to create in their students a lifelong commitment to volunteering. He pointed out that there are even programs done by colleges and high schools in order to gain more than two million volunteer hours a year. Owning a lot of time, Being mature and able to handle wide range of tasks, and receiving the opportunity to discover a…

My youth group leader instilled the importance of community service in me at a young age. Youth group is where I have done the majority of my community service projects. One of my favorite projects was the grocery bandits. My Wednesday night class encouraged the church to bring in groceries to make a Thanksgiving meal out of. We ended up being able to make several full boxes of groceries. My class delivered these boxes anonymously to families in the community that were struggling. I believe that community service is a great thing, but being able to do it without taking credit for it takes real courage. I’ve also volunteered at a homeless shelter/food storehouse twice with my youth group. Other community service projects that I’ve done include: cleaning an elderly ladies house, cleaning another elderly ladies yard gathering supplies to take to the battered…

I joined a community outreach program where we went to a surrounding town’s housing complex and helped the kids after school with homework. I worked with a student, who when I started was in kindergarten, his name was Jordian. When I first started going he could barely sit still in a chair, he could barely count 5 and was not close to reading. When I left my senior year he would come in and mostly everyday sit and start his homework. He was now adding without much difficulty and starting to learn multiplication. During reading time he would sit down and work on his reading. Helping the kids not only learn but make a positive impact on their lives is something I will keep with me forever.…
