The death was sudden and unexpected. Hamlet more so became emotional because he felt that his father had been forgotten due to the marriage of Claudius and his mother Gertrude. Many people including the characters in the story confused Hamlets grieving as insanity or depression. Death is never easy to cope with, especially the loss of a parent. Everyone grieves differently. Polonius had given King Claudius and Queen Gertrude the impression that Hamlet had gone mad. Hamlet had come to visit Ophelia in her sewing closet. When he came, Polonius over saw everything. Ophelia described Hamlet stating “Lord Hamlet, with his doublet all unbraced, no hat upon his head, his stockings fouled, un- gartered, and down to his ankles. Pale as his shirt, his knees knocking each other and a look so piteous in support, as if he’d been loosed from hell” (1823). His uncle had killed his father. This upset hamlet to a great deal. He didn’t know how to react. He had lost control of his emotions for a second and the ghost figure told him to remain calm. He also asked of one final request from Hamlet before he acts upon the news. The Ghost like figure request that Hamlet “But howsoever thou pursues this act; taint not thy mind, nor let thy soul contrive against thy mother aught: leave her to heaven” (1824).
