Where the Wild things are…

Teenagers are the most misunderstood people on the planet. They are treated like children and expected to act like adults. The media makes teenagers out to be disobedient, disrespectful, sleazy people with no regard to anyone but themselves. They make it look like we think of nothing but parties, alcohol and sex. Everyone knows the majority of teenagers in society today are nothing like anyone you see on TV. It makes me sick that I can't turn on the TV without being insulted by the "ideal" image the media tries to send out to teens. All it does is lower people's self-esteem and self-worth.
Only a minority of teenagers are like this. Because many teenagers are smart successful students who although like to have fun, they thrive in life. I find that many people inspire teenagers for their love of life and their ‘young at heart’ attitudes. However teenagers are stuck between the innocent child and the mature adult, which makes them very vulnerable and judgemental.
The media have become obsessed with portraying teenagers negatively because of the few individuals who make stupid decisions and draw attention to themselves. What makes things worse is that the society today is constantly under the influence of the media and they believe all the rubbish that gets fed to them. Therefore teens are at risk and are bonus points for the police because they are not aware of their rights yet and will truthfully answer any question they are asked. Often not realising they have just incriminated themselves with an admission of guilt.
It is sad to think that nobody can see the good in teenagers and the ones that are very successful are never recognised by the media. A lot of

people may not realise that many teenagers have been victims of bullying thus their violent attitudes and language. It is estimated that 1 in 3 violent teens have

Been bullied/ were bullies in the past. This could also be from violent childhoods surrounded with dangerous people. TEENAGERS aged 15 to 19 are Australia's most dangerous people, new figures from the Australian Institute of Criminology showing violent crime is highest among this group. Teens have been responsible for a disturbing number of bashings, robberies, abductions and sexual attacks and 17-year-olds are the worst offenders. The figures were released as part of the annual Australian Crime: Facts & Figures report. The report showed the rate of assaults in the 15-19 age groups was
886 per 100,000 people in 2007, compared to a rate of 85 per 100,000 for offenders aged 55-59.
Robberies and extortion in the younger age group were committed at a rate of 115 per 100,000 people.
Sexual attacks were most prevalent among 15-year-olds, with 64 offences per 100,000 people.
This compared to 18 per 100,000 in the 60-64 age group.
As the years have gone by and the laws have become much stricter, teenagers are acting more mature and the stats have dropped dramatically. Although now teens are less violent, people will always have the stereotypical image stuck with them. This is because “our eyes are not viewers; they’re also projectors that are running a second story over the picture that we see in front of us all the time.”
This leads to the influenced adults thinking back to how teenagers were in their day and comparing it with their minds.
Demographer David Chalke said “easier access to alcohol, the prevalence of video games and changing family structures were to blame for high rates of crime among teens.”
To resolve the issue of bad representation in the media maybe they should take a different pathway and say something positive about teenagers for once. Only a minority of teenagers can be disobedient and stupid however where do the rest of us stand. Do you think that the media cares about the accomplishments that we make, of course not? Here are just some amazing achievements by teenagers that have changed the way we live today and how successful they have become. I wish that people could recognise these talents and think twice about teenagers, because to be honest, they really are not that bad once you get to know them.

Age 19 - Steve Jobs begins collaborating in electronics with Steve Wozniak in electronics, and developed the personal computer within two years.
Age 19 - Mark Zuckerberg develops Facebook, the leading social networking system for young people on the internet. (image below)
Age 12 – William Johnson earned the Medal of Honour for his actions during the Seven Days Battle on the Peninsula Campaign during the American Civil War.
Age 13 - Jonathan Krohn home schooled, actor, internet radio host, guest speaker at CPAC, author of Defining Conservatism.
Age 10 - Michael Kearney, home schooled, becomes the world's youngest university graduate. At age 17, he began a teaching career at college.
