- George Washington chose the talented Alexander Hamilton, who had served with him throughout the Revolutionary War, to take on the challenge of directing federal economic policy as the Secretary of Treasury. The first issue that Hamilton tackled as Washington's Secretary of Treasury concerned the problem of public credit. Governments at all levels had taken on so much debt during the Revolution. The commitment to pay them back was not taken very seriously. By the late 1780s, the value of such public securities had decreased to a small fraction of their face value. In other words, state IOU's — the money borrowed to finance the Revolution — was viewed as nearly worthless. Hamilton's vision for reshaping the American economy included a federal charter for a national financial institution. He proposed a Bank of the United States. Modeled along the lines of the Bank of England, a central bank would help make the new nation's economy dynamic through a more stable paper currency. The central bank faced significant opposition. Many feared it would fall under the influence of wealthy, urban northeasterners and speculators from overseas. In the end, with the support of George Washington, the bank was chartered with its first headquarters in Philadelphia. The third major area of Hamilton's economic plan aimed to make American manufacturers self-sufficient. The American economy had traditionally rested upon large-scale agricultural exports to pay for the import of British manufactured goods. Hamilton thought that this dependence on expensive foreign goods kept the American economy at a limited level, especially when compared to the rapid growth of early industrialization in Great Britain. Rather than accept this condition, Hamilton wanted the United States to adopt a mercantilist…

It means they regard anything not forbidden in the constitution is allowed for federalist government. Conflicts between these two parties grew out of their opposing ideologies the Democratic-Republicans supported states rights and a strict interpretation of the U.S. Constitution, whereas the Federalists favored a strong central government and a broader interpretation of the Constitution. However there are more than 3 major topics that I could talk about involving the Federalist and Democratic-Republicans between the years 1789 and 1812. American federalism offers a solution to fears that the people will only be ruled by majorities from different regions that contained different interests and values. In the past America was run by the Articles of Confederation but it was not strong enough to hold the nation together. Under the loose Articles of Confederation, the national and state government was unable to maintain order. After the Revolution, Americans mounted debt from purchasing goods from other countries. To solve this problem the states would tax their citizens and this caused many people to go into bankruptcy. When Shay’s Rebellion happened people started realizing that by having a less powerful national government, it created many problems within the states and it also demonstrated the importance to maintain domestic order. The framers of the constitution created a federal government that replaced the weak confederation with a more powerful national government.…

The different biased policies of which Federalists believed in interpreting the Constitution broadly, while Jeffersonian Republicans (Anti-Feds) believed it should be interpreted strictly, continued through the presidencies of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. However, throughout both of their terms, both parties eventually “switched” their ideals, and followed the other party’s belief. “Our country is too large to have all its affairs directed by a singled government” (Doc. A) is a letter from Jefferson to Granger, then the complete opposite is written in Doc F, where Randolph talks about how the J. Republicans abandon their original principles. This is just one example of how later the two parties ideals were “switched.” Actions such as the Louisiana Purchase, the Embargo Act, and the establishment of the Second National Bank show this.…

The Founding Fathers helped ratify the Constitution at the Constitutional Convention. Some of the Founding Fathers towards the Constitution were Thomas Jefferson, and Alexander Hamilton. Both men had very strong beliefs about what should be done to help approve the Constitution and what should've not been done. Hamilton was a strong supporter of the Constitution. He had a broad or "loose" interpretation of the Constitution. Hamilton believed that federal government had wide-ranging powers due to the clause allowing Congress to make any "which shall be necessary and proper." Jefferson accepted the Constitution, but was concerned the president was too powerful. He promoted the Bill of Rights to protect individual rights. Also he had a narrow "strict" interpretation of the Constitution, and believed that powers not specifically given to the federal government belonged "to the states respectively, or to the people." The constitutional issue was that all the Founding Fathers had many different suggestions and opinions, so it took a while for all these men to come to an agreement. This brought many issues and arguments during the process. One of the arguments were the national bank system which was apart of Hamilton's economic plan. The national bank was to win support of the business community, and help out the government in financial dealings. The bank funded by both federal government and wealthy investors which issued paper money and other government funds. Hamilton and the Federalists supported the national bank because they believed it would encourage investors and business community to support the government. On the other hand,…
