Jack’s feelings for Lucy definitely have some issues. Jack walks in to his family’s house where this woman, who he has never met before, is sleeping on the couch. He is suspicious about this girl Lucy and is told she is his brother’s fiancée who he has never heard of. The fact that his only brother hasn’t announced his engagement is very suspicious to him. His initial perception of her “sneaking” out of the house has alarmed him and he assumes that her actions are “fishy”. He comes to her apartment to seek her out and try to obtain more information about this girl, Lucy, but his first encounter at her apartment building is with Joe Junior, who exaggerates and boldly lies in order to feel good or proud. When Jack asks him about Lucy he says that he is “dating” her. As our text on page 26 says, “Perceivers tend to make the pieces fit”, Jack thinks that this statement from Junior is correct because he is automatically “trying to make the pieces fit” into his suspicions or assumptions that he has already made about Lucy. Jack continues on to follow Lucy around and tailors his conversation to fit his perceptions. He asks questions trying to put the puzzle together and prove that she is a liar.
On the other hand, it seems that Jack is also physically attracted to Lucy because of her looks and because she is humble yet kind to everyone in his family. Jack sees that his family has taken a liking to her. Everyone in the family seems to enjoy her company and likes to have her around, which like page 29 says in our text, Social Attractiveness, how much you want to have someone around, fun to be with and makes you feel good when you interact. Lucy has also proven to be attractive in ways to help with the delivery of furniture for Jack’s family furniture business. When Jack takes her the gift of a couch from his parents, he discovers that she is willing to help out and take charge of moving the couch into Peter’s apartment. I think that Jack sees this as Task
