White Person Who Wants To Know How To Be My Friend By Pat Parker
For the week of November 27th, the reading that I had the greatest reaction to was the piece “For the White Person Who Wants to Know How to Be My Friend” by Pat Parker. I liked this piece because it draws necessary attention to some of the many things that white people say to blacks that they may not realize are not appropriate. It points out some of the stereotypes that blacks put up with daily but never really address them to their friends. It made me realize just how much blacks are stereotyped, even by their friends, which is really sad to me. I wish that whites didn’t need to say and do these things to make blacks seem like they aren’t like whites. They are still humans too and deserve to be treated just the same as whites. The things …show more content…
Why does the sentence have to followed by a comment that addresses the color of her skin? To whites, they probably don’t see anything wrong with this comment, but in reality, what they are saying can be extremely harmful to a black woman’s confidence. This article should be circulated more so that way white people can start treating their black friends better, because they likely don’t even know that what they say is hurtful. This week at my site, I played outside with some of the kids. We played with stilts and a long jump rope. It was a lot of fun and beneficial that there are extra volunteers there in Tuesdays so that multiple kids can be outside. One of the kids really caught on to the stilts which was super cool. I tried it but couldn’t get more than a couple steps without falling off. I noticed that some of the boys would pout when they didn’t get their way or couldn’t get the hang of the activities. They would be done pouting within a few minutes because they would want to be back in the action with the other kids. This week provided me with a different experience than I have gotten in the past from Packer. It was super cool to see the kids outside playing instead of sitting on the computers the whole

Gary Nash author of Red, White, and Black purpose to their readers is describing the early colonists, but also the relationships toward Europeans, the Indians, and the Africans. Nash successfully analyzes the impact of the colliding three cultures and interprets them to give an overall theme about the relationships between those who made America what it is today. He has shown another point of view to his reader that we grew up and was raise in a white people land; learning only the White people point of view through history. His purpose of writing Red, White & Black was to prove that Native Americans and Africans were not victims, but played as a active role to American history.…

Terri, as a black male I felt so uncomfortable in my gut reading how black men have oppressed black females. Some of the reading was so difficult emotionally to read I felt a little sick to my stomach. The reading describing what happened on slave ships to children angered me to point of wanting to ask God why was this necessary. I began to wish I could go back in time and "wipe out" every slave owner and crew prior to picking up the first slave.…

I chose to talk about the reading by Canedy, Dana. “The Talk: After Ferguson.” In the reading we are introduced to the life of a colored person. She explains the struggle of having to even bring up the topics of police brutality and black people. She is in a battle with herself of knowing when the time is right to explain to her child that society is making the police and black man a problem.…

Black Boy is an autobiography of Richard Wright who grew up in the backwoods of Mississippi. He lived in poverty, hunger, fear, and hatred. He lied, stole, and had rage towards those around him; at six he was a "drunkard," hanging about in taverns. He was surrounded on one side by whites who were either indifferent to him, pitying, or cruel, and on the other by blacks who resented anyone trying to rise above the common people who were slaves or struggling.…

From an early age, I can remember going to school and being confined into my own social group of friends conveying in each other about daily problems, emotions, and how our personal lives are going. At those points in my life I had a sense of peace and felt anything I told my peers of this group they could relate and wouldn’t judge anything I said. Why would I give you this little piece of my childhood you may ask? To answer that is not being able to relate to anyone in the class or school who wasn’t from my racial background. As like in Beverly Daniel Tatum’s article I was one of those kids who sat at the lunch table full of blacks feeling as if they were the only people, in the school who I could relate to and understood me being a person of color.…

Reading the content in this book made me get a picture of what it was like to be a colored person in this time. My eyes were opened to the meaning of the word “nigga”. Nigga is such a derogatory term, yet now-a-days it is used by people so much. Kids in this generation use it as a term of endearment when they see their friends, or they say it when they are shocked by something. Frankly, I don’t believe they know how serious it really is. The fact that white people could look at a person and see less than a human being when they did nothing wrong distresses me. They (white people) treated them as if they were property and below them. Even though we don’t have racism to this extent anymore, it is still around. This book warns people of the moral cost of slavery and opens eyes to what was once common practice. With books like this around, what happened won’t be forgotten.…

In the article “ A change of Heart about Animals” by Rifkin, he states “ They feel pain, suffer, and experiences stress, affection, excitement and even love--and these findings are changing how we view animals.” These characteristics are just like any human being they feel pain just as we feel pain, they suffer just like we do too therefore i agree that they should have the same rights as us humans. Although many other people might say they're just animals but they realize they are species just like us humans.…

Chicago has been known for its violence. Many claim that it is due to class while others think it is due to race. Research of gangs typically does not include the role of race, though a closer look at gangs in Chicago tells a story of hatred between races. Frederic Thrasher, an experienced sociologist of gang research, followed Robert Park, a noted liberal and leader of the Chicago Urban League, in arguing that gangs were the problem of violence in the city and not race. Park says “gangs” came from the “city wilderness” without regard to race, creed, or color. Park along with Thrasher are both wrong since it is because of race that the…

In the article she talks about her kindergarten students and how one student told her that her mother was giving her pills to turn her skin white (Segura-Mora). The moment she shared with this student resulted in a teachable moment that benefited the students all together, but it was a sad moment to have to experience with children of such a young age. Segura- Mora begins to explain that as teachers we are “cultural workers” and “If teachers don’t question the culture and values being promoted in the classroom, they socialize their students to accept the uneven power relations of our society along lines of race, gender, and ability. Yet teachers can-and should- challenge the values of white privilege and instead promote values of self-love” (Segura-Mora,). I fully support and agree with Segura-Mora’s claim and as an educator I hope to do exactly that.…

This week’s readings seemed to have different topics yet also many similarities. The first reading which was “The Color of Supremacy: Beyond the Discourse of “ White Privilege ’’ by Zeus Leonardo tells us how white privilege is part of the reason why racism prevails even today. The reading even somewhat bolsters McIntosh’s argument that sometimes, white people simply aren’t even aware of their ‘ privileges ’. I however, feel that racism persists because people let it persist. Racism is not a thing of the past that just happens to still be prevalent. Racism is an ugly reality of the present day world we all live in.…

The event "Symbols and History of Lynching in America” gave me an insight into the facts behind lynching in our history, along with providing impactful discussions that I couldn’t have gotten anywhere else. Before the event, I didn’t understand a variety of different aspects of lynching and other black experiences that are even present in modern day. One example is the variety of things that black individuals would get lynched for; such as attempting to vote or disregarding white privilege in any way, shape, or form. I knew that lynching occurred, just I was unaware of the specific reasons for them. Furthermore, I didn’t know that many of these lynchings were public events; families gathered for them with their young…

Autism was unknown and unheard of in the ancient cultures and medieval times. This disorder just so happened to “appear” approximately 60 years ago. The numbers each year continue to rise. According to research, studies based on the prevalence and evolution of autism, fifteen years ago, the likelihood was one to two children per 10,000 (Sharpe, 2007). Studies show that in 2010, the overall prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder was 14.7 per 1,000 children who are aged eight years. To further simplify, one in 68 children will be affected or diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (PubMed, 2010). Now, 50 families a day learn that their child has autism (Sharpe, 2007). This once rare diagnosis has climbed to epidemic proportions and numbers…
