White Privilege In Society

For many decades racism has become a major issue that has affected many people in negative ways. Many people may not realize the notion of racism and how big of a problem it is within our society today, because of the assumptions that we make on each other. From previous generations, to now racism has affected whites and blacks in many ways. Many ways such as income, jobs, crime rates, education and more. Privileges towards whites has affected blacks in many ways. Within society today whites are showered more with many privileges than what blacks are. In the book “White Privilege” author and writer Paul Rothenberg illustrates privilege in two ways based on different elements whites and blacks. She states “the characteristics of the privileged group define the societal norm which often benefits those in the privilege group. Second, privileged group members can rely on their privilege and avoid objecting to oppression” (Rothenberg, p.110). Based on Rothenberg’s expression on privileges being viewed in two ways takes away all the other discriminated categories that people put white’s and black’s privileges in. Looking at society expectations on black’s versus whites there has never been a black privilege. Rothenberg states “white people can decide whether or not they want go into a predominantly black neighborhood, but in most cases black people have no choice but to deal with a predominantly white world” (Rothenberg, p.130). The case that Rothenberg makes on whites and blacks shows that whites will always have the better outcome than blacks because blacks have no choice but to deal with white people. As an African American woman I can say we succeed in our career with them, we get an education with them, and even make deals with them. This all leads down to the reasons why blacks are not mentioned frequently likes whites are. In this case this brings up another reason that points out why blacks are showered less than whites. The most popular topic that is discussed in the news today is police brutality. This topic is related to white and black privilege because it illustrates who the authority more. In this case it would be the whites who are more superior towards the blacks because blacks are always the ones who never receives justice in the end. A white officer shooting a black man for his defense, black people would consider that racist, and a violation towards the black community. According to an article written by Mark Alexander which discusses the approaches towards black privilege today. Alexander states “Black privilege means that a black president and his black attorney general are entitled to frame this case as one based on “color” rather than “character,” and launch a national constituency-building initiative. Meanwhile, they are entitled to ignore the epidemic of black-on-black violence and the grossly disproportionate statistical instances of black-on-white violence occurring in urban centers across the nation” (Alexander, 2015, p.3). This example shows the role on how media connects to the negative assumptions made on blacks.
