Whitney Houston
Whitney Houston is a star who has touched the hearts, and ears of millions of people. She is an American pop and R&B singer, actress, film producer, record producer, songwriter, and former fashion model. Her crossover success opened doors for other African Americans, particularly women, to find success in the music business. She is known mainly for her powerful, penetrating pop-gospel voice, but she has done so much more. She is extremely generous with her time and money and has shown a commitment to make the world a better place. Whitney Houston has had some spectacular achievements. Her debut album became the biggest selling debut album of all time for a solo artist, a record that has since been broken. Her follow up album became the first album by a female artist to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200, and she has had a record of seven consecutive #1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, overtaking the previous record of six achieved by the Beatles, and the Bee Gees. Houston continued her success in Hollywood in the 1990s, starting with the box office hit The Bodyguard. The soundtrack became the best selling soundtrack of all time, and the single "I Will Always Love You" became the best selling single by a female artist and 6th best selling song in the history of music. During the 1980s, Whitney Houston was one of the first black artists to receive regular rotation on MTV in its early years. It is even more impressive because it was a time dominated by white male rock bands. Though Whitney Houston has had twenty long years in the music business, she continues to sing and create new albums. She even has a new album due out this November. The New Jersey Hall of Fame would be a perfect addition to her long list of achievements. Whitney Houston is definitely qualified to represent the Arts and Entertainment category within the New Jersey Hall of Fame. Not only has she produced spectacular music, but she has put her wealth to good use by helping others
