who are you and what are you doing here?
In Mark Edmunson’s article “Who Are You and What Are You Doing Here?”, he directs this article to incoming freshman and talks about going to college with very little resources and being the only one in his family to goto college; he also talks about what students need to do in college to be successful. Edmunson thinks everyone should find out who they really are in college so you know what you want to do in your future career. Not just going to college pursuing a career thats not much of an interest because it pays good money.

College is one of the best decisions to go towards in life. That doesn't mean go and spend thousands of dollars on a major you don't actually love. Edmunson believes that students should find out what field their really into so they will rise above in their future career and be shocked by how far they've come. Now, many might argue that college is the only way to secure a good job position and the only reason to get a degree. Jeffrey Selingo, a professor at the University of Arizona and the former editor of the Chronicle of Higher Education, writes that students and their parents prefer to obtain a bachelor's degree designated to a specific area; for example, the most popular today is business. That is why “students and their families, faced with big tuition bills, want to be sure to pick a major that leads to a job after graduation. ” (Selingo) That is to say, parents and students are worried that their investment in education can be wasted and hope to get a return in the future.…

During the college years of a person’s life, some of the biggest and life changing decisions are made. The decision of choosing a college, picking a major, and then the pursuit of a career affect the rest of an individual’s life. College students often receive a great deal of advice, from many different people, concerning their career. There are many people that give the advice, “Do what you love,” while, in contrast, other people will give the advice, “Do what makes money.” These two pieces of advice are very conflicting and it brings up the argument - should you do what you love or what makes the money? For both sides of the argument, there is support and reasoning that is very valid and persuasive. By looking at the argument subjectively, it is difficult to choose a side; each argument has its pros and cons. I believe that there should be a balance of both. Everyone has passions and if an individual has the opportunity to turn his…

Today, many students like myself all over the America have walked down the hectic aisles of high school and have sat in some of the largest lecture halls in college. As kids, we were somewhat taught that going to school and getting an education would be the key to our success and thought that if we didn’t fulfill these expectations, we would end up homeless and live a terrible life. For so many years during my educational career this was the mentality that I believed in. Although this may be over exaggerated, I believe that this may hold some truth to the many college students all over the world. It is almost like we volunteer to go into debt and deal with all the stress that a college education brings us because we feel like it will get us…

In America, college is perceived as one of the most important decisions you will make in your lifetime. Since elementary school, students are taught so that they can one day attend to a good college. However, the question is: is college the best option?
