The study done at college as Tannen points out the results could be skewed due to that to count the students words there would have to be a research to see what the topics they were really talking about were. Some topics interest more women than man and vice versa. I believe that many of these exams and studies have been done due to curiosity. For women and girls, the talk is the glue to a relationship (347). Men tend to say women talk more and women tend to say that is man are the one who talk more. But it really depends on the topic. Studies have shown that the female love of chit-chat begins at a young age. Girls learn to speak earlier and more quickly than boys (347). They produce their first words and sentences earlier, have larger vocabularies and use a greater variety of sentence types than boys of the same age.

In the article "His Talk, Her Talk" by Joyce Maynard, she believes that men are not smarter, steadier, more high-minded than women. She tells an experience of her own to show that there is such thing as "men's talk" or "women's talk". At the party that she attended, "it suddenly became apparent that all the women were in one room and all the men were in the other" (27). Of course, they redistributed themselves then, but no one had suggested they segregate. Also, she feels that "the talk in the kitchen was simply, all the women, felt, more interesting" (27). She also mentions that man and woman are both have different types of talking. "I think I know my husband very well, but I have no idea what goes on when he and his male friends get together. Neither can he picture what can keep a woman friend and me occupied for three hours over a single pot of coffee" (27). When a group of women conversation to her, "is likely to concern itself with matters just as pressing as those broached by my husband and friends" (27). So her conclusion is that…

Men tend to be more vocal in class and want to talk. Women on the other hand, usually sit back and listen. Though this is not for every situation studies have proven this to be true. “…men speak more in class more than women…many of them find the “public” classroom setting more conducive to speaking, whereas most women are more comfortable speaking in private to a small group…” (Tannen 4). Classrooms are more comfortable for men to speak, they enjoy the public setting with the freedom of debate or discussion. Women prefer smaller, more compact groups for a discussion in “private” in order to express…

Women's discussions, gossip or whatever you may call it is based on establishing a connection between the women that leads to a discussion of shared values. Tannen compares the two sexes to find men use their conversation as a type of competition or a way to preserve their independence. For example, men talk about their knowledge regarding sports, cars, business, ext. Meanwhile, women try to foster intimacy with others through a more personal communication. In the short story, "Near Pala" we see the characters demonstrating a perfect example of exactly that. The story starts out with the men in the front, controlling the vehicle and discussing business while the women in the back are lost in conversation of pregnancies and vacations abroad. According to Tannen, women use language to achieve intimacy, resulting in what she calls "rapport talk." For women, "talk is the glue that holds relationships together," and so conversations are "negotiations for closeness in which people try to seek and give confirmation and support, and to reach consensus." Men, on the other hand, use language to convey information, resulting in what Tannen calls "report talk." Because men maintain relationships through other activities, conversation for them becomes a negotiation for status, which explains why men debate more frequently amongst each other than women.…

A major disparity between men and women is their conversation goals. Women always want to share everything, but men do not. For instance, a woman likes voicing everything she thinks and how she feels. Moreover, the women like to tell story what happened in a day and she want her partners can feel and understand her story. In contrast, a man does not really want to share what is going on in his mind, except that the conversation is inevitable. In contrast, men do not want to share his…

Another essay that would be a good read is “Man to man, women to women”, by Mark A. Sherman and Adelaide Hags. They talk about how males and females talk about different things. Women tend to talk about kids, jobs, husbands and other female things. Men will usually just stick to sports, work, and anything else that happens to be in their surroundings, as in anything that happens to be on the news. So men and women differ in conversation.…

In Heart of Darkness what initially stuck out to me was the extent in which Joseph Conrad describes the un-human like qualities of Africans. At one point in the excerpt Conrad calls africans a “prehistoric man”, and at another point describes the way in which the Africans live as a “madhouse”. It seemed to me as if he was not looking at a people rather Conrad was looking onto Africans as if they were caged animals simply there as a resource for Conrad and his men. The overall condescending nature of the excerpt frankly made the passages difficult for me to read. Mainly it called into question for me how a person can look at another human being as somehow innately inferior to himself.…

According to an article I seen by Anne Meier (1999, pp. 115-119), “There exist numerous stereotypes in the way men and women communicate.” We will first begin with the most common form of communication…talking”. One of the most common notions is that women talk more than men. Women are also thought to participate in “empty talk”, dealing with trivial and unimportant subjects. While women’s speech is believed to be unassertive and lacking in power, men’s speech is viewed as bold and aggressive. Men and women typically talk about different things. Women, in conversation with women, discuss personal matters, business, and men. Men control the topic of conversation, and may use abrupt and direct methods to do so, especially with women. More than men, women use linguistic forms which may be perceived as less assertive and lacking power. These include compound requests, which are more polite and less direct; qualifiers and disclaimers, which make the request or message sound tentative; and tag questions, which are attached to a statement, weakening them.”(Meier, 1999)…
