Gunpowder is one of the greatest and most powerful inventions the Chinese people created. The chinese created a formula which was made of Saltpeter, Charcoal, and Sulfur during the Tang dynasty possibly around the year A.D. 850. The Chinese were trying to make a formula that would make you live forever but instead it shortens your life by killing you. The first use that the Chinese had for gunpowder was to make fireworks. The next use of gunpowder was as a flame thrower. Finally, gunpowder spread across Europe and the Islamic world where it was used in canons and later in guns. Early on, the Chinese realized that gunpowder could be used as a weapon, but didn’t realize its true potential. They first used it to start fires, and to blind, burn, and poison victims. Later on they modified the fireworks and made what were the first flame throwers. These were used during the Sung dynasty against the Mongols. It was an arrow that was attached to a tube of gunpowder that was ignited and it was propelled across enemy lines. The Chinese continued to develop their weapons to fight the Mongols and even made the first cannons and grenades. She thinks that more people’s lives are directly impacted by books than by gunpowder. She thinks that the knowledge that we get from being able to read printed books is powerful enough to change lives in many ways. She says that one printed book in particular has the ability to transform lives for the better forever, and that book is the Bible. However, I think that gunpowder is the greatest and most powerful invention that the Chinese have invented. Gunpowder has done a lot of things. It took guns and cannons to win our right to be a free country. This right allows us to read anything our hearts desire, including the Bible. Since winning our freedom, our country has fought in many wars around the world to bring freedom and rights to people who have been persecuted. Our country continues to fight around the world to save the lives of persecuted people. Our lives depend on the ability to defend ourselves. This takes weapons. The weapons we have today have evolved from the Chinese invention of gunpowder. Finally, to top it off, we can celebrate our freedom with a big huge fireworks display on the 4th of July. Personally, I still think that the greatest Chinese invention is gunpowder, because without it and the weapons that use it, we wouldn’t have the freedom that we have
