March 11, 2012 In The Kite Runner, by Khaled Hosseini, Hassan serves as the minor character/foil to the main character, Amir. Hassan possesses qualities such as loyalty and selflessness. These qualities contrast the characteristics and qualities of Amir because he is both disloyal and selfish. Although Amir possesses disloyalty and selfishness while Hassan is present in his life, he later on retrieves the characteristics his half-brother Hassan had. Amir was the son of a wealthy, well known man in Northern Kabul. He develops a friendship with one of his servants, who is around his age. As years passed, Amir had a chance to save Hassan, but his actions affected both he and Hassan, which led them two different paths in life. So, Amir’s favorite time of the year was winter because he could enter the tournament. It was an overcast winter day when Hassan and Amir were practicing for the tournament. Amir believed that Hassan was the greatest kite runner he had ever seen. On this day Amir was chasing Hassan through the neighborhood. He was hopping gutters and going through narrow streets to catch the kite. It looked as if they had lost the kite, but when Amir finally caught up to Hassan, he saw that Hassan was just sitting cross legged on the ground. Amir questioned what he was doing, but Hassan calmly told him that the kite was coming. Amir asked Hassan, “How can you know?” Hassan replied by saying, “Would I ever lie to you, Amir agha?” Amir decided to play with his mind a little and asked, “Would you?” Hassan explained how he would do anything before he lied to Amir.
