point guard for his high school basketball team. In his junior year of high school, Allen iverson was able to lead his basketball team and his football team to the Virginia State championship
On February 14, 1993 Iverson and a group of friend were arrested in Hampton. There was a shouting duel between Iverson´s group of friends and another group of young kids.
In the middle of the fight Allen Iverson picked up a chair and he hit a woman in the head with it. Iverson was sentenced 15 years in prison with a 10 year suspension.
After he was released from prison his old high school wouldn't take him back. Since his old high school did not take him back he had no option but to attend and complete his senior year at Richard Milburn High School, a school for students that are ¨at risk¨ and unfortunately he could not play sports there. Luckily, three years of high school basketball were just enough to convince Georgetown University head coach John Thompson, that Iverson was ready for college ball.
Iverson won the Big East Rookie of the Year in his first year at Georgetown and he led his team to the sweet 16 round in the NCAA tournament. In his second year at Georgetown, Iverson helped the team win the Big East Championship and he led his team all the way to the elite 8 in the NCAA tournament, one round farther than the previous year. After his sophomore year at Georgetown, Iverson decide he was going to follow his dreams and join the NBA Draft. Iverson ended his college career averaging 22.9 points per game, the highest points per game average in Georgetown …show more content…
history!
In the 1996 NBA draft the Philadelphia 76ers selected Allen Iverson first overall. The Sixers were the worse team in the league so one player was not gonna help the team a lot, but drafting Allen Iverson was a huge step in the rebuilding of this team. In his first season he helped the team improve their record from 18-64 to 22-60, averaging 7.5 assists per game, 2.1 steals per game, and 23.5 points per game, Allen Iverson was also named the NBA Rookie of the year.
Iverson continued to help out his team in following years leading the Sixers to a 31-51 record his second season in the league.
This team started to become more and more noticed and they were proving to other teams in the league that they weren’t the team that anybody could beat, but in the 1990-2000 season the Sixers took a huge step in the making of their franchise. The sixers had a winning record of 49-33 and they had made the playoffs for the first time in long time. In the playoffs Iverson averaged 26.2 points, 4.8 assists, 4 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game leading his team all the way to the second round of the playoffs in which they lost to the Indiana Pacers in six
games.
Going into the following season Iverson and the Sixers knew they had some unfinished business from the previous season. They started the 2000-2001 season with a determination to win, Iverson started the season on a hot streak leading the Sixers to a franchise record 10-0 start. Iverson did not cool down after this. Allen Iverson averaged a career high 31.1 points and he averaged 2.5 steals a game, leading the Sixers to a winning record of 56-26, the best in the eastern conference, and giving Iverson his first ever MVP award. The sixers remained hot in the playoffs and they were able to make it all the way to the NBA finals where they would play against the Los Angeles Lakers. The Sixers shocked the world by winning game one of the NBA finals, but unfortunately the Sixers fantasy did not last long as they went on to lose games 2, 3, 4 and 5 and lose the championship to the Los Angeles Lakers. Although they had lost in the championship everyone still saw the Sixers as winners because of the long journey they had made in the rebuilding process.
As years passed Iverson got older and slower and he couldn’t really produce what he had produced in the past. This led to him eventually being traded to the Denver Nuggets in 2006. Unfortunately the Nuggets were not to happy with his production and he was then traded to the Detroit Pistons in 2009, where he did not last very long either. In 2009 He was traded back to the Sixers to “finish where he left off” and at the end of the 2010 season the Sixers let him go.
In 2011 Iverson decided to go play basketball in Turkey “for fun” but he did not like it much so he decided to 2012. After spending the entire 2012-2013 as a free agent Iverson decided it was time to call it quits. In January a remarkable career came to an end as Allen Iverson decided he would retire and never return to the NBA.
