interaction and excitement made her want to teach. After finding her passion Anne Marie taught in elementary schools varying from kindergarten to sixth grade. As she was there teaching elementary level she built science programs in the district. The science programs she built in the schools were made more engaging to the students through the activities being hands on.
In the classroom Anne Marie’s classes are hands on and she is working with the students one on one.
In the classroom “making the atmosphere comfortable for students, trying to relate to students, being organized, and the activities engaging and hands on.” Through making the classroom a positive attitude and atmosphere she is able to effectively teach through encouraging her students. Making the classroom where students are comfortable to learn allows for students to participate in class and gain knowledge through asking questions when one may not understand. When she relates to her students she is able to teach to their understanding becoming effective in giving the knowledge to her students. Organization is a key to success of being a teacher so that way as the teacher one does not waste time because all the material is not organized. In order for the activities to captivate students attention the activities are taught in a learn by doing method allowing for the student to discover the
answer.
Anne Marie started in elementary school teaching all grades. There she built science programs in schools and districts. After a few years she moved on to the more state and national aspects of teaching. Talking to politicians to big businesses she worked on grants that would change science and implement science more in classrooms and not less. After working at state and national level she moved to working directly with the future teachers. She is a professor at Cal Poly working in the liberal studies department with the science program. The program works with students whose goals are to become an elementary school teacher and teachers science at a level students understand and to where we will be able to teach to our classes one day. Teaching at Cal Poly has a direct influence on future elementary school teachers and how they too will one day teach their future classes.
As Anne Marie teaches, her passion for teaching and sciences is apparent when she teaches. She is full of energy and life when she is working with students. During class as we explore topics by doing activities she comes around having conversations with her students checking for understanding. In the classroom she uses the textbook to guide the class but there is more hands on interaction and geared towards student interest. Fitting the needs of her students learning styles Anne Marie is able to connect with her students. Anne Marie is able to connect on a more personal level with an open door policy with her students. Through her open door policy she is able to form a connection with her students that allows for her to help students through life. From school to life she is there for her students. The rewards of Anne Marie’s impact she has made with the programs she has built and lives she has influenced. In teaching there are physical rewards and rewards of seeing your student lives grow. Anne Marie received an award from President Obama at the white house for science teaching. As she received the award “think about a movie of the students and families and teachers that got her. All the moment and pieces that put it into the reward.” A slideshow of all the student lives she has impacted and all the families she has helped went through her mind. Then there is the reward of seeing your students grow and see the moment when they finally understand an idea. When Anne Marie went to a science conference earlier this year she saw four of her former students who are all teachers now promoting science. Seeing former students and the influence she had made her realize why she puts all the effort in.
