The first person to actually see the land was Rodrigo de Triana, he was a look-out man on the Pinta. Christopher Columbus renamed the Island to San Salvador (Holy Savior), but it was originally called Guanahaní. San Salvador was originally settled by the Spaniards, and afterward by the British. he landed in the north coast of Cuba on October 28, 1492, because he was told that there was a great amount of gold to be found in the “Island called Samoete”(Young). However, he went looking for it, but did not find any. He renamed Cuba to Juana in honor of the young prince, the son of the King of Spain. To Columbus, the Island of Cuba felt like heaven. The beauty of Cuba such as “the clear water, the gorgeous colors, flowers, birds, and insects on land acted like a charm on Columbus and his sailors” (Young). He kept searching for gold in Cuba. His goal was to spread Christianity on his voyage as well as bring wealth to Spain. He thought that converting natives (the Indians) into Christianity was easy.
