child, he works in the household while other slaves work in the fields. When he is seven, he is given to the son in law of Captain Anthony, Hugh Auld, who lives in Baltimore. In Baltimore, Frederick Douglass enjoys a relatively better life.
In general, slave owners are more aware of being cruel toward their slaves in front of their neighbors that will not own slaves. Hugh’s wife Sophia Auld has never owned slaves before. Because of this she is kind to Frederick at first. Eventually she teaches Frederick to read. Sophia’s husband tells her to stop teaching him and he implies education makes slaves uncontrollable. Sophia begins to catch on to the mentality of being a slave owner and stops being nice. Sophia and Hugh Auld start to treat Frederik even worse. However, Frederick still likes life in Baltimore better. With the help of locals Frederick teaches himself to read. As Frederick educates himself, he becomes even more aware of how horrible slavery is. He then discovers the existence of the Abolitionists. After Captain Anthony dies as well as others, Thomas Auld who is Captain Anthony’s son in law now owns Frederick. Auld is a mean owner. Thomas thinks Frederick is not manageable. Auld rents Frederick to a man named Edward Covey. Edward Covey beats Frederick. Frederick loses hope and stops pursuing his freedom as exhaustion prevents him from doing
so. Frederick finally gets enough of the beatings and lashes out at Covey who never touches Frederick again. After being rented to Covey he is then rented to another man named William Freeland for a couple years. Frederick begins to pursue his plan to escape again. Frederick starts educating other slaves. He later forms a plan to escape with other slaves. William Freeland finds out about Frederick’s plan and sends them to jail. Frederick is sent back to Baltimore by Thomas Auld. Frederick is sent to learn a trade and there are racial problems. Whites think blacks will take their jobs. Frederick becomes even more successful at his trade, more so than whites, getting paid highly. Douglas saves his money and escapes to New York. Douglas changes his name once he escapes, from Bailey to Douglas, in fear that he would be recaptured. After some time Frederick Douglas gets married to a woman named Anna Murray. They move to Massachusetts together. This is where Frederick gets involved with the Abolitionist Movement.
