She is very powerless in this house and is treated very poorly by the mother and the eldest daughter.
As we get into the story goes on greits role becomes very complex with affairs and jelousies. As vermeir notices that Greit has a passion for art he askes greit to help he mix colors for his paintings. but things get more serious and he askes her to model for his painting. This is frowned apon for a maid to do as she is there to clean and cook. There are points in the book when greit feels like she is going to get cought or being watched by the mother and her being painted Greit is also watched by the children of that house during most of the book. When she first showed up one of her first taskes is to go get water at the canal and all the kids follow her and she tells them to stay at the top and she will go down but all but one stay up their and one goes down with her and she does not like that because i feel that she feels like they are watching her to make sure she is not doing anything wrong. The whole time and time again peter sees her and he startes at her and eventualley he gets very close to her. My feelings on this is that she feels that sh is being watched or someone will find out that she has a relaitionship in the outside world, but she feels like she has to do it for the wellbeing of her family and it will help her family financhally even though she did not like peiter. The last thing i want to say as greit is that she is veiwed through out the whole book it she has two sides one good one bad. Her good side is a very nice girl who is working to help her family make money to pay for their house and feed her family because of her fathers injury when he was working at a tile factory. In the book she works hard and is watched but she does not really mind it because one of the main goals she has is to make money. The other side of her is a girl that does not care about the money she just cares about love and herself and the men in her life. As the book moves on she shows us this side towds the end when vermeir gives her the earings and once he dies she trades them in for money, also she ends up marring peiter and we will never know if she did it for the love or for his
