Who Is Harriet Tubman A Hero
Longing for a taste of the apples she was picking, young Harriet Tubman watches the overseer very closely. Finally, she gets her chance, the overseer turns and starts walking away and Harriet sinks her teeth into a juicy apple. Suddenly she feels an excruciating pain come across her back, the overseer had caught Harriet and now was mercilessly whipping her. After her cruel punishment was over, Harriet told herself that one day she would be free to eat all the apples that she wanted. In 1822, Harriet Tubman was born. As a slave, Harriet learned at a young age that she had to work very hard if she wanted to survive. While working hard, Harriet would dream of one day being free, free to do and eat what she wanted. When Harriet was young, she was determined that she would one day be free. That determination led to not only Harriet’s freedom but also to hundreds of other’s freedom as well. Harriet was brave when she refused to help tie up an escaping slave. She was also brave when she returned to the south even after she knew how much she was worth. Being filled with kindness, Harriet was willing to save her husband even though he had tried to prevent her from escaping. It may not have seemed like kindness at first, but when Harriet pulled out her gun to prevent slaves from turning back, she was showing them great kindness. Determination, bravery, and kindness are some of the reasons that Harriet Tubman was and is a hero, but the biggest reason she was a hero is her devotion to God. By traveling the railroad, by returning to the south many times, by taking hundreds of slaves to freedom, Harriet risked her life countless times because she was so utterly devoted to what God had called her to do. If Harriet was not devoted to God, then He would not have filled her with determination, bravery, and kindness. Without her devotion to God, Harriet would not have saved over 300 slaves and she might not have even escaped herself. Once free, Harriet not only saved many slaves from slavery, she also helped many more after the war. Harriet was one of the most wanted people in the south, yet God protected her and filled her with courage and cleverness so that she could save numerous people. Without God helping her and giving her strength, Harriet would have never rescued slaves, she would have never helped blacks after the war, and she may have died a poor unknown black instead of the well known and honored hero that she was. Harriet had always known about God and believed in Him, but it took the head injury that she received from the overseer for Harriet to put all of her trust in God.
