Who Is John Proctor's Motivation In The Crucible

The motivations of The Crucible : reputation, jealousy, and guilt take part in the story as well as in McCarthyism. In McCarthyism many people were targeted and jailed for being a communist. These accusations led to people losing their jobs and to move from the United States. In The Crucible people were hung for accusations of witchcraft. Reputation is the beliefs or opinions that are generally held about someone or something. In The Crucible Parris is worried about his reputation. Parris’s daughter is in a coma after the scene, Betty, Abigail, and a few other girls were caught performing witchcraft acts. John Proctor is another character worried about his reputation. Proctor is worried about his good name being ruined. (ACT IV)
Proctor didn’t want any documents of his name being put out to his town to ruin his reputation as well as his wife
Putnam's daughter accused Jacobs of witchcraft. The reason for this was so Putnam could get Jacob's land. Jealousy and greed played a role in Putnam's life. Putnam only wanted more land. Guilt is defined as the fact of having committed a specified or implied offense or crime. Guilt overwhelms two of the main characters Proctor and Hale. Proctor feels guilty throughout the story about his affair. Later on through the story his wife Elizabeth is accused of witchcraft and thrown in jail. Hale feels guilty about all of the false accusation he made towards the women he accused of witchcraft. (ACT IV)
Proctor can’t live with the mistakes they’ve made. So they both give their lives. In McCarthyism people were also accused for being guilty by association. Just as in The Crucible, the accused were manipulated to give out names who “practiced” witchcraft.
