Putnam's daughter accused Jacobs of witchcraft. The reason for this was so Putnam could get Jacob's land. Jealousy and greed played a role in Putnam's life. Putnam only wanted more land. Guilt is defined as the fact of having committed a specified or implied offense or crime. Guilt overwhelms two of the main characters Proctor and Hale. Proctor feels guilty throughout the story about his affair. Later on through the story his wife Elizabeth is accused of witchcraft and thrown in jail. Hale feels guilty about all of the false accusation he made towards the women he accused of witchcraft. (ACT IV)
Proctor can’t live with the mistakes they’ve made. So they both give their lives. In McCarthyism people were also accused for being guilty by association. Just as in The Crucible, the accused were manipulated to give out names who “practiced” witchcraft.
