In that part of the movie, they have gone to the cave already to hide after taking Johnny Red Chief in town. They take him after noticing that he wants to run away because his father is never playing with him and always yelling and calling Andrew a brat. After that scene, they chase him and finally persuade him to come with him to the cave where he can play and not get yelled at. When they arrive at the old miners cave, Red Chief starts talking nonstop like the blabbermouth he is. In doing so, Sam brings them back to the task at hand by telling them to start the plan for the ransom.That is the summarization for showing his leadership skills.
