Who Is Macbeth To Blame?
In Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth, fate is often a common discussion among readers. Does Macbeth create his own fate or is he a victim of circumstance? Macbeth is perceived as a victim of circumstance, and a victim to his own unavoidable fate. Macbeth and his friend Banquo come upon three witches, or the wyrd sisters, who tell Macbeth will become Thane of Cawdor, and one day he will become King. This is the small summary of Act 1 Scene 3 in Macbeth. Is Macbeth really the one to blame for becoming a power craving maniac? It could be Lady Macbeth, which is the person who started the fire in Macbeth’s heart. Or it could be the three witches who told Macbeth their prophecy about him. Telling him that he would become Thane of Cawdor and eventually
become the King of Scotland one day. All four of the women, Lady Macbeth and the wyrd sisters, gave Macbeth the so called, “big head” and he made the decision to kill the king, Duncan. Since Macbeth is weighed down by fate, society, and his own ego, and it is more pressure than he can handle. Shakespeare drops images of clothes that don’t fit Macbeth. This imagery is to show that Macbeth is living far too lavish a lifestyle for his depth. When he murders Duncan, he thinks he hears a voice say "Macbeth does murder sleep". Sleep symbolizes innocence, purity, and peace of mind, and in killing Duncan Macbeth actually does murder sleep. Lady Macbeth begins to sleepwalk, and Macbeth is haunted by his nightmares. In conclusion, one more question is still to be answered. Do we as adults, have complete control over what happens in our life? There is only one answer to that question and that is no. nobody has control over what happens in their life. Fate only exists if one believes fate to exist, and allows these “supernatural factors” into one's life. The three wyrd sisters of Macbeth reveal prophecies to him that seem to unfold in the end. Macbeth chose his own fate and used his own free will to complete the wyrd sisters’ prophecy. The tragedy shows just how influential the belief in fate can actually be on free will, and vice-versa.
