Oprah Gail Winfrey was born on her family farm January 29,1954, in Kosciusko, Mississippi.
Her parents were teenagers and weren’t married at the time of her birth; Oprah father, Vernon Winfrey was a barber and her mother, Vernita Lee had moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to apply for employment as a maid. Soon after Oprah was born, both parents decided to have Orpah live with her grandmother Hattie Mae Lee, who raised Oprah to believe that church should be an important fact in her life. The Buffalo United Methodist church was the first church that Oprah did public speaking at the age of four. When Winfrey was nine years old she was sexually abused by her cousin and when she turned ten years old her uncle sexually abuses her until she was fourteen years of …show more content…
age.
Oprah moves to Nashville Tennessee to live with her father and pursue an education at Tennessee State University in 1971, she began a career at a radio station at WVOL in Nashville. On September 8, 1986, “The Oprah Winfrey Show” was one of the first television women talk show to be broadcast nationally. The Oprah show inspired people to cherish the small things and make people feel like our voices is being heard. For example, Winfrey did an episode where she talks about teens who overcomes Adversity. There was a young African American male, who was asked to tell his story about overcoming adversity, this young boy was visiting his grandmother and was caught in the crossfire of gang related shooting. The stray bullet causes him to lose his eyesight, and during the interview Winfrey ask him a series of question, that inspired people to care about mankind. Not only did she communicate with this young boy, but she also followed up with him years later, he has learned to read braille, play the piano and he applied for college. A lot of talk show host don’t follow up with their guest. Oprah Winfrey once said, “Turn your wounds into wisdom”. I believe that watching Oprah television show inspire me and other people to talk and share our feels because maybe one day it will influence someone else’s.
Oprah Winfrey wrote and publish over seven books throughout her career.
One of Winfrey book is title: Uncommon Wisdom of Oprah Winfrey: A Portrait in Her. The book basically tells the truth about Winfrey tragic childhood and everything’s she encountered before the world knew who Winfrey really was and how her humble beginning help shape her into the person she is today. Reading her book for the first time influence my way of thinking when it came to my family situations. For example, in her book she talks about dealing with poverty as a child and how her mom was a maid. Oprah didn’t have any friends when she lived on her family farm, she use to catch roaches and put them in jar because her family couldn’t afford a dog. This story at once took my breath away because she was so honesty and wasn’t even embarrassing to tell the truth about her life. This story inspired me to be true to myself no matter what the situation is. I should be embarrassed for my short comings, but I should find happiness in the little things. For instants, I have four brothers and three sisters, and we lived in a three-bedroom house in Cincinnati Ohio, I had to wear hand-me- down clothing. I would have been embarrassing, if it wasn’t for Winfrey book because I remember that if I would have asked my mom for new clothing she probably would have to pick up more hour at work. By me wear these used clothes I feel like I was showing my mom that I was being
grateful.
In conclusion, I know that I am like Oprah Winfrey because she inspires me to use my education as a positive influence, that will inspire many generation to live out their American dreams. I believe that learning about Winfrey obstacle, made me realize that you can go through poverty and deal with adversity and still manage to become greater than are downfall. I believe that are common interest are that we live out our dreams; whether if it’s finishes college or applying for that job position. The legacy that I would like to make in this timeline, is to live my life the way my children could be proud of me and the people I influence can say.
