Chapter 1
• Recieves telegram- telling him his mother has died
• She had been living in an elderly home
• Meusault asks his boss for time off
• Meursault feels guilty for the inconvenience he has put unto his boss
• Catches bus to Marengo
• Doctor reassures Meursault that he should not feel guilty for putting his mum into the home
• Caretaker of mortuary goes to open coffin but Meursault stops him and requests not to see the body
• Spends night in the mortuary beside his mother’s coffin
• Woken by people coming into the mortuary
• Meursault meets with director of the old person’s home who asks him if he would like to view the body again, he declines once more
• One of the undertaker’s assistants asks if his mother was old, Meursault responds vaguely as he did not know her exact age

Meursault notices Thomas Perez, his mother’s good friend, is laggin behind in the funeral procession
• A nurse tells Meursault that he will get sunstroke if he walks too slowly, but will work up a sweat and catch a chill in church if he walks too quickly.
Meursault agrees, thinking, “There was no way out.” He remembers little of the funeral, aside from Perez’s tear-soaked face and the fact that the old man fainted from the heat
Chapter 2
• Meursault sees why his boss is angry at him, becase his mothers furenal was on a Friday which meant he would get 4 days off rather than the requested 2
• Meursault goes to the beach where he ssees a former co-worker Marie Cardona
• He helps her onto a float, he joins
her
• Swim together, flirtation throughout the afternoon, questions socially ineptness?
• Meursault invites her to go to the cinema with him
• She surprisingly learns the burial of his mother was only a day earlier
• Spends night with Marie
• She is gone by the morning, decides to have lunch at Celestes
• He concludes nothing has changed at all
Chapter 3
• Next day, Meursault returns to work, boss asks about mother
• Celestes for lunch, he asks Meursault if everything is alright, but Meursault changes the subject after a short scarce response
• Raymond Sintes, a neighbour invites Meursault to dinner, talk about Sintes’s profession who is suspected to be a pimp
• Raymond tells him that when he suspected his mistress of cheating on him, he beat her and she fled, led to altercation with brother
• Meursault says he ‘didn’t mind’ being pals with Raymond_
• He returns to his room to hear Salamano’s dog crying softly

• “She asked me if I loved her. I told her it didn’t mean anything but that I didn’t think so. “ IMPORTANT QUOTE
• Following day, Meursault and Marie go swimming again
• Go back to his apartment to have sex
• Marie spends night at Meursault’s and lunch the following day
• Marie asks Meursault if he loves her, he says it doesn’t means anything, he doesn’t think so” His response makes her look sad
• The two hear an argument in Raymond’s apartment. Raymond is beating his mistress
