Who Is Shell In Greener Grass
Shell’s name has more meaning beyond only her mothers love of seashells. Shells in general contain hard protective outer case often covering or supporting something. Through numerous incidents that occurs in Shell’s life, she remains strong and unbreakable. Other reasons why Shell is just like her name is because she is fragile, introverted, and although she is strong on the outside, she has more of life hiding inside her.
After Shell’s parents get divorced and separated, Shell remains strong and does not break emotionally. Instead she goes along with it by visiting her father in Toronto and living her daily life; visiting her friend Vicki or mainly just growing up. Shell may be perceived as strong in terms of the divorce, however, she may be hiding her feelings internally.
Although Shell perceives herself as strong and unbreakable, she is also fragile. For instance, when Shell and her father react to the bushes moving and branches cracking in the “Fiddleheads”, the narrator states “Shell stands frozen, which is funny, because inside she gets very warm” (Bozak 32). Shell’s exterior appearance resembles a stiff, hard shell while the inside remains unknown to her father or anyone around her. Clearly, it is hard to identify whats inside a closed shell. Since she gets stitches to heal her cut, it shows how fragile she is. Similarly, some shells are more fragile and easier to break than others. Furthermore, in “She Will Make Music Where-ever She Goes” Shell gets upset about being called a grimace, also shows how delicate she is and not always unbreakable.
In Thirteen Shells, the stories: “Fiddleheads”, “Fairtrade”, “Greener Grass” and “She Will Make Music Where-ever She Goes” all give examples of why the protagonist’s name is Shell. Like shells, the character is fragile, unbreakable and has unknown internal feelings that she does not show or

A strong knit bond between family promotes positive living and will tend to affect the way a child grows and the personality they develop. However, a dysfunctional family with abusive tendencies may create negative experiences for a child, which can traumatize and damage the child's mentality. The image of different types of family relationships are shown throughout the novel, which makes the reader understand why characters are the way they are. The influence of family is a very key theme in the novel because it exposes Perry Smith’s motives as to why he committed the gruesome killings, which makes the reader sympathize with Perry due to his abusive past. Perry came from a dysfunctional family, whose mother left his father taking him and his brothers and sisters. His mother started drinking which caused issues that lead his father to come back and find them. However, Perry’s father, was shunned by his children because they had learned to hate him. His father reveals “She got mad and then said said she would turn the children to hate me, which she did , all but Perry” (126), in regards to his wife. Lt. Cross was madly in love with Martha, a woman he dated once in New Jersey. She sent him letters that he kept in the bottom of his rucksack but those meant absolutely nothing in comparison to the pebble. Martha found the pebble on the Jersey Shoreline, precisely where the land met the water at high tide. “In the first week of April, before Lavender died, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross received a good-luck charm from Martha. It was a simple pebble, an ounce at most. Smooth to the touch, it was a milky white color with flecks of orange and violet, oval shaped, like a miniature egg. In the accompanying letter, Martha wrote that she had found the pebble on the Jersey shoreline, precisely where the land touched water at high tide, where things came together but also separated “(O’Brien pg. 9). The pebble at this point acts as a symbol for Martha. It is a Martha that Lt. Cross can feel, kiss, and smell. It allows Cross to think about the relationship between him and Martha. He often spent his evenings daydreaming about Martha form camping in the mountains to relaxing on the beach. With the pebble, Cross can picture Martha walking barefoot on the Jersey Shoreline. He could see her bending over, right where the land met the water, and picking up the pebble. The pebble…

Often times, the finger of blame is virtuously pointed at a parent if he has failed his obligation in raising his child. If he compromises their safety, abuses his child, and disregards their needs, society immediately condemns him. As the child grows up, they will begin to realize what is going on and gain hatred toward their parents. However, no matter how many times a parent messes up, the child will forgive in a heartbeat. In The Glass Castle, Jeanette Walls is that child, delineating her favorite childhood memories spent with her father, Rex Walls as some of the best moments of her life, despite Rex’s blatant irresponsibility and destruction wrought onto other aspects of her life. Even with the many instances in which Jeanette’s father failed to protect his children, refused to take responsibility for them, and even stole from them, Jeanette still cared and loved him until the day he passed for two reasons: one, he is a never-ending source of inspiration, and two, for his constant ability to make her feel special.…
