Who Is Shrek?
The fictional character that I have decided to analyze is Shrek from the Shrek movies.

Some background information about Shrek, well his full name is Shrek the ogre, his age is unknown but my guess is that he is around 25-30 years old at least in human years since he gets married and has kids later on in the movie. There weren't any legitimate answers to what his childhood looked like but according to the shrek musical, It is said that he was sent away by his parents because it was ogre tradition to do so and he was left and in the book of Shrek he is said to have been thrown into a hole that leads to the real world. He is seen traveling alone, being either screamed at or teased by passers-by. After scaring away an angry mob, he arrives at his swamp, enters an outhouse, and literally breaks

But he appeared quite dangerous, misanthropic, and very cranky. However, Shrek is peaceful and does not care to hurt anyone, but just wants to live in solitude and be left alone. Shrek is accompanied by Donkey, an excitable and hyperactive talking donkey. When Shrek is first seen, he successfully scares off villagers by roaring at them, but it later becomes obvious that they were only attacking him because he is an ogre rather than because he did something wrong. In Shrek, during a conversation with Donkey, he says "Look, I'm not the one with the problem, okay? It's the world that seems to have a problem with me. People take one look at me and go 'Aah! Help! Run! A big stupid ugly ogre!' They judge me before they even know me. That's why I'm better off alone." This implies that he decided to isolate himself after trying and failing to find acceptance amongst others. He uses his attitude as a mask as to say that he doesn't need nor want anyone else in his life. His behavior and actions are a mere reflection of his attitude as he pushes people away before they have the chance to reject him. This mask gives people the illusion that he

Fortunately, Donkey was accompanying Shrek throughout his journey. Donkey serves not only as a comic sidekick but also as an ally. This ally helps the hero navigate unknown terrain in the inmost cave. Upon returning home and having to face his loneliness and despair, Shrek finally listen to Donkey’s insistent urgings that he would follow his heart and declare his love for princess Fionna. The ogre’s change of heart and the decision to act on his feelings can be marked as the beginning of hero’s initiation. The ordeal then comes when Shrek breaks into Lord Farquaad’s wedding ceremony to rescue the princess yet again. In the book The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, by John Boyne, the character Shmuel, a small Jewish boy from Poland, has great reason to be unhappy about many unjust changes that have recently occurred in his life. Firstly, Shmuel was forced to move from one side of his city, Krakow, to the other side, which were separated by a large wall. He and his family used to live in a small flat above a watch shop they owned, and had to relocate to a small dwelling with one room. There they had to share with another family as well, eleven people in all. These would not be very appropriate living conditions placing so many people in such a small place, and Shmuel would be right to be miserable over it. Secondly, Shmuel and his family were removed from this new home and overcrowded onto a train with hundreds of other Jews. In the book, Shmuel had this to say: “ 'The train was horrible'… 'There were too many of us in the carriages, for one thing. And there was no air to breathe. And it smelled awful.' ” (Boyne 129). These would be completely terrible and inhumane conditions to travel in, being crammed into a train car with no windows or doors, with no fresh air to breath. Shmuel and the others should have been very resentful and upset. Lastly, Shmuel was forced to go to “Out-With” Camp (realistically known as Auschwitz Concentration Camp). He had to walk from the train station, and at the camp was beaten, made to work, not fed, and separated from his mother. These are absolutely outrageous offences towards Shmuel, and he should be furious about what has been done to him. In conclusion, Shmuel has had many horrendous, loathsome and undeserved deeds done to him, and should definitely be very…

Vomit. It's neither pretty to see nor pretty to clean up. "Ralph the Duck" begins with the retching sound of the narrator's golden retriever being sick on the carpet . As the narrator, who goes unnamed throughout the whole story, "carries seventy-five pounds of heaving golden retriever to the door and pours him onto the silver, moonlit snow" (1), he thinks to himself, "He loved what made him sick" (2). We learn the dog vomits because he has been eating the rotting carcass of a deer, which he continues to go back to, night after night. Through the dog we see the correlation to the narrator's current destructive lifestyle.…

Shrek tells the tale of a lonely ogre trying to find his way though life in the forest. Along the way, he meets new friends, falls in love with a princess, fights a prince, and learns survival skills, all the while learning even more about himself. He realizes exactly what it means to be a good person, someone people can trust, as well as being comfortable in his own skin. Satire is the use of humour and with a critical attitude, irony, sarcasm, or ridicule for exposing or denouncing the frailties and faults of mankind’s activities and institutions such a folly, stupidity and vice. Shrek subverts fairy-tale traditions by making fun of numerous classic conventions by using unexpected events and characters, and by reversing things audiences would typically expect in a traditional fairy tale story. Vicky Jenson and Andrew Adamson make this story a modern day version of fairy tales beliefs today where modern day values have changed.…

Cohen argues that the composition of a monster depends on the time and location when it is created, and although these may change, the basis of monsters stays the same (4-6). The unconventional character roles in Shrek relate to the society seen in the film and the real world. Shrek and Farquaad both exhibit monster-like traits. However, they express these traits for different reasons. Farquaad’s traits root from his own personal greed, seen through his desire to control more property. Because he is in the ruling class, he represents an authoritarian ruler, critiquing the dominant ideology, which tends to be mostly in favor of the ruling class. Shrek acts the way he does because he is conditioned to do so. He believes that being an angry ogre is his role in society and he must act it out. The traits that Shrek exhibits could vary depending on aspects in the fictional society, suggesting that the traits he expresses result from being institutionalized. When these insights are applied to the film they offer advanced claims against the dominant ideology, such as, that monsters could be hiding in plain sight in positions of power, or that particular societal problems may be the result of institutionalized racism or other forms of…

Shrek, who lived peacefully in his swamp, finds many fairy tale beings, including the talkative Donkey, who were forced to the swamp by order of Lord Farquaad. Shrek and the Donkey decide to travel to the country to see Farquaad to try to regain Shrek 's swamp. The two make it to Farquaad 's palace in Dulac and come across a knight tournament to decide who will rescue Princess Fiona. Shrek manages to best the other knights, and Farquaad makes an agreement with Shrek, that if he goes to rescue Fiona he would give Shrek his deed back. Shrek was met with a very big challenge at this point in the story, but he never recoiled in front of his enemy, one of the ten ideals in the code of chivalry. When Shrek encountered the dragon at Princess Fiona 's castle, he again didn 't recoil even though he could 've died at any…
