Who Is The Antagonist In The Necklace

This story is only filled with little characters but with immense changes and personalities. The use of characters in the story is used well and in an interesting way. Two of the people in this story have to go through a hardship and one even changes in the process. The protagonist in Guy de Maupassant’s “The Necklace” is Mathilde Loisel. In the beginning of the story she is a flat character because she does not have any personality it her. She wants to be wealthy and have the best life possible. Mrs. Loisel seems selfish and is not grateful at all of what she does have and what Mr. Loisel can provide for her. Mathilde is unsatisfied with her home and wants to have luxuries like one of her friends she use to have. Mathilde stopped seeing her friend because she could not bear the thought to suffer in her presence of how poor she thought she was and low in economy. This is a character the audience does not want to root for. The antagonist is the story is Mathilde spouse Mr. Loisel.
Loisel does not complain like Mrs. Loisel, she is not use to this hard life and she becomes old with worn hands. Finally, Mathilde’s character understands a hardworking life. Nearing the end of the story on a day that Mathilde decides to relax and take a walk she runs into her friend that let her borrow the necklace. Mathilde lets her feelings out and tells Madame Forrestier about the necklace situation. Madame Forrestier tells Mrs. Loisel that the necklace was just a costume piece that was only worth about five hundred francs.
Mr. Loisels character will do anything for his beloved wife. He puts her desires before his and does not wish for any other life but the one they have now, as long as he is with her. He would sacrifice what he wants for her wants, even after the necklace incident. As the antagonist Mr. Loisel protects his wife.
