One trait of an Eros lover is that he or she idealizes love. Romeo shows this trait remising about Rosaline, who has recently broken up with him. “Love is a smoke raised with the fume of sighs / Being purged, a fire sparkling in lovers' eyes / Being vexed, a sea nourished with loving tears” (1.1.181-185). Another trait of an Eros lover is that he or she begins a relationship during a “love at first sight” situation. Romeo first sees Juliet during the Capulets’ party and instantly falls in love. Romeo also exemplifies the Eros trait of sharing development and control of the relationship. Eros lovers consider love to be life’s most important activity, and will do anything to stay in love. Romeo and Juliet put their families and friends at risk to love each other. The two lovers risk a greater feud between the families so they can be with each other. Romeo destroys his image and gets exiled in the name of love for his friend, Mercutio. Juliet emotionally damages her family by faking her own death to be with Romeo. Both Romeo and Juliet greatly idealize love to the point of killing themselves at the thought of living without it. The couple becomes completely infatuated with each other and throw rhyme and reason out of the window to stay with each other. “And but thou love me, let them find me here. / My life were better ended by their hate / Than death proroguèd, wanting of thy love.”
