When Abigail and the girls are questioned regarding witchcraft, Abigail lies to everyone, accusing Tituba when she says, “She sends her spirit on me in church; she makes me laugh at prayer” (Act One Line 920-921)! Instead of telling the truth, Abigail only points fingers at innocent people and refuses to admit the truth to everyone. Tituba admits she was with the Devil to avoid being hanged. Once all of the attention is off Abigail, she announces she’s back with God and knows who is also is working for the Devil. This causes an uproar and Abigail’s reign begins.
The whole town hungers for Abigail to name the people who are conspiring with the Devil so they can arrest those people. Abigail names multiple people whom she doesn't like. She claims that John Proctor’s wife, Elizabeth, is a witch so she can be together with Proctor. Elizabeth says about Abigail, “Why-! The girl is murder! The girls are too scared to go against Abigail, because she threatens, “I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning” (Act One Line 57-58). When Abigail says the dancing in the forest was for fun to Proctor, nobody else hears them talking alone. If anybody questions her or thinks she's lying, Abigail can accuse them of witchcraft and have them hanged She has the whole town wrapped around her finger. She is a force to be reckoned
