Seceding from the union is not only illegal but dangerous. To secede from the union would mean you relinquish any rights to protection. That means the united states of America does not have to come to the aid of the seceded state for any reason as no laws the united states has applies to the seceded states. Which is why sir Butler, during the civil war was about to withhold slaves belonging to the rebels, for they claimed not to be a part of the union anymore. Regardless of what the states may claim, they have no right to secede from the union. No matter how much they disagree with the preceding of the executive office, they cannot legally break away from the united states. It is seen as void in the eyes of the law. While John Smith didn’t believe this was in the best interest of all the states, the president did his best to protect the union. He believed it was in the best interest of the states not to cause a civil war by picking rather he’s for or against slavery. Regardless of what John or the Carolinas felt, it is against the law to break free from the union. There is no constitutional right of any state to do so. The president has taken an oath; He is obligated to preserve, protect, and defend the union, and he will do so at any cost. He doesn’t find it impossible for the southerner to survive without the slaves. He believes it is possible for everyone to live harmoniously. I find what John is saying to be ridiculous. No amount of lives are necessary to sacrifice in order for anyone to live a more carefree lifestyle. The slaves deserved to live the life they choose as well. I don’t think John Smith fully understood what he was saying to Virginia during his speech.
