Who Killed Jonbenet Ramsey Essay
Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey?

More than 20 years ago, JonBenét Ramsey was killed in her home in Boulder, Colorado on Christmas night. Today, the murder is still unsolved. But the infamous ransom note, how John Ramsey found her in the basement, and the parent’s overall behavior proves that they weren't just involved, they did it.

The Night Before

On the night of Christmas Day 1996, a family of four had just arrived home from a friends Christmas themed house party and laid their children down for bed. This family was the Ramsey family; the father John Bennett Ramsey, the mother Patsy Ramsey, and their two children Burke and JonBenét went to sleep peacefully, unbeknownst to the horror that they would discover the next morning.

Patsy’s own notepad was used to write the ransom note, and her paintbrush was used for the makeshift garrote. But, the strangest item out of the few, and one of the most compelling pieces of evidence in this case, were the fibers that were found under the duct tape on JonBenéts mouth from the black and red checkered sweater that Patsy Ramsey wore to the Christmas party the night before.

Out of the 9 doors and 100 windows opening to the outside of the Ramsey’s spacious mansion, not a single one showed any signs of a break in; there were even cobwebs on the basement window where JonBenéts body was found. This concludes that the killer had to be someone from inside the home. Anyways, who would write a three page ransom note other than someone who was trying to cover their tracks in the home.

A handwriting expert by the name of Cina Wong, who has worked over 60 trials says that it is highly possible that Patsy Ramsey wrote the infamous ransom note. She found substantial and extremely unique ways that the letters were formed; and in total, she found over 200 similarities in the ransom note writing and samples from Patsy’s

During the autopsy, “some sort of undigested fruit, thought to potentially be pineapple, was found in JonBenet’s stomach that had been consumed just a few hours before she died” (Syrdal). Pictures from the Ramsey household from the day before the murder show a bowl full of pineapple on the table, with Burke Ramsey’s fingerprints all over the bowl. Patsy and John claimed that Burke had been sleeping the entirety of the night of the murder. Also, more evidence surfaced that placed further suspicion on the Ramseys. The ransom note was written in the Ramsey house and after being analyzed it was discovered that it was indeed written by a woman. Finally, after Patsy had finished reporting the disappearance to 911 she accidentally stayed on the line for a couple seconds where she can be heard saying “help me Jesus” and “what did I do” (Syrdal). The Ramseys were never prosecuted due to lack of sufficient evidence, but there is still a huge “umbrella of suspicion” placed upon the whole family (JonBenet Ramsey Murder Fast…

The morning of December 26th, 1996 Patsy claimed to have “found a ransom note asking for $118,000 for the child” (Solin 1). The amount of money requested is very peculiar, considering the Ramsey family was extremely wealthy and $118,000 also happened to be “the exact amount that John Ramsey received as a bonus from work” (The Forensics Outreach Team 2). The note also included direct movie quotations from popular movies with ransom notes in them. Next, the handwriting expert Cina Wong said to have found “over 200 similarities in the writing of the ransom note and the 100 samples of Patsy’s penmanship” (Spargo 1). If this is not enough to prove the note was written by Patsy, the note was written on a pad from the Ramsey household. When rewritten by researchers, it took them an average of 20 minutes to get the whole note down (Norman 1). If looked at from a realistic point of view, it is extremely unlikely for an intruder to break into a house, murder a child and sit at the kitchen table for twenty minutes without being caught. Finally, although the trauma to the head was a major factor in her death, JonBenet’s autopsy reported strangulation was a factor. She was found with a garrote around her neck composed of tools from Patsy’s craft kit. In addition, Mark Beckner, former Boulder Police Chief who lead the JonBenet Ramsey case, reports that strangulation occurred somewhere between forty-five minutes to two hours after the brain injury. If an intruder staying for twenty minutes sounds questionable, forty-five minutes to two hours should convince one that it was certainly someone belonging to the…

Some of the theories have been investigated and all signs point to the family. When the bolder police arrived to the home of the ramseys they saw them disappear into the basement. Then later when the police were asking questions they proceeded to ask if anything was missing or out of place in their home, and they told the family to go look around the house and see if anything was. The first thing John benet did was go straight to the basement out of all places, and then carried his baby girl upstairs, and took off the duct tape from her mouth. This caused tampering with the evidence and made the evatigation impossible to figure out who was the killer. The police believed that the parents did it or were covering for someone who did. All the evidence that was credible pointed to their family because it was all in the home and left there after the murder. As for the bizarre ransom note that was three pages long and written on Patsy’s notepad; whose handwriting matched the one on the ransoms note. Who would have the time to write an intricate note and practice it before hand? It made it seem like the killer was someone who cared and was upset about her death. Another theory was that night she was killed Jonbenet actually wet her bed and went to go explain to her parents what happened and her mom woke up screaming at her six year old daughter and struck her in the head with a flashlight. This would have…
