3.) Do you think John Mackey has a good strategic vision for Whole Foods? Why or why not? What do you like/dislike about the company’s motto “Whole Foods, Whole People, Whole Planet?” Do the motto and the principles underlying it (Exhibit 1) really matter at this company or are they just nice words and cosmetic window dressing? Explain.
John Mackey’s vision for Whole Foods was “For Whole Foods to become an international brand synonymous not just with natural and organic foods but also being the best food retailer in every community in which Whole Foods stores were located.” He wanted Whole Foods Market to set the standard for excellence in food retailing. All in all John Mackey wanted to help support the overall health of his customers, his employees and that of business organizations as well. I think this is a good strategic vision. People in America are becoming more and more obese and with the help of grocery stores it can help fight that. If grocery stores start promoting their healthy products over their unhealthy products it is going to help out the customers and they will hopefully want to start being healthier as well. Also having natural and organic products is just better for you all together so by people consuming these products they will be improving their overall lifestyle. I like their motto of “Whole Foods, Whole People, Whole Planet.” I think it gives the company an advantage that they really are caring about their customers, employees, and their planet. They are doing what they can do better everyone in this world and try to better everyone’s lifestyles. I think all the principles that go along with this statement and their vision they stand behind. Their core values go along with their motto and you can tell they really care about everyone and strive to do their best to please everyone.
