These preconceived notions regarding the asylum force himself to ask, “Why can’t I ever say no?” as he realises the ‘madness’ he has gotten himself into. As the play progresses, the characterization of Lewis develops through continuous interaction with the patients which allows him to recognise them as ‘normal people who have done extraordinary things’, which is how Justin explained them at the beginning. The turning point for Lewis is when he chooses to continue work on the play instead of assisting his friend Nick with the Moratorium, showing that he has realised how much more important working in the asylum is than the trivial real world problems which Nick focuses on. The stronger the bond becomes between Lewis and the patients the easier it is for the audience and Lewis himself to realise how unjust the real world is by placing stereotypical prejudices on the…

In Bonnie Tsui’s, Choose Your Own Identity, she discusses the flexibility that lays within racial identity. In Tsui’s essays she states that even though our race has such a huge roll in the way we make our political and societal decisions, racial identity has become fluid. In her mind, we are making a come back and prioritizing the importance of who we identify as, rather than focusing on what we are. In Tsui’s own words, “In a strange way, the renewed fluidity of racial identity is a homecoming of sorts, to a time before race - and racism - was institutionalized.” (Tsui, 2)…

On the first day of practice he introduced himself as “Jimmy Johnson” our defense line coach. He had a beer belly and glasses and slick wet hair and nappy eye brows and an itchy musty beard. His breath smelled like dog liver. My first impression of him is he just looks weird and mean. We began practice we ran around cones. We went over plays. Where we should line up according to the offense. Coach Johnson always thought he knew what is best for us. He would have running like slaves on D’jango. Coach ran the soles off my cleats. After all this running, my girdle begun chafing creating a rash like an unchanged baby. My feet would always hurt after practice. Looking down my feet was throbbing like a heartbeat. We would run all the lines on the…

An individual’s perception of the world is unique, conflicted by emotions and heavily influenced by their surroundings, thus giving individuals a distinct interpretation of how distinctive experiences convey meaning. The play “the Shoehorn Sonata” composed by John Misto in which he explores distinctive experiences highlighting themes and memories, evidently both characters Bridie and Sheila overcame themes of adversity, captivity, human rights and ultimately friendship through embracing their experiences. Misto’s main focus was to bring forth awareness for the nurses through distinctive experiences.…

Krakauer wrote, "no one was affected more powerfully by his or her brief contact with the boy than Ronald Franz"(Krakauer 48). My life and values have been influenced by relationships with others just like Ronald Franz was greatly impacted by Chris McCandless. Many of the relationships that I have been involved with have changed what I value in a relationship and ultimately what I value in my life. Different relationships have opened me up to several different perspectives and different lights, which I am so grateful for. It is inevitable that out of all the relationships that I have made there are negative and positive aspects of each relationship, which I learned from and each of these relationships are blessings. Every relationship is crucial…

Within the essay ‘The Lives of Others’, author Alekskandar Hermon ends the essay with a rhetorical question. Hermon asks “What am I?”, which is a fitting question for an essay with the reoccurring theme of identity and self definition. Hermon continues further, accompanying the question with an answer of his own explanation. Hermon wrote, “I am complicated…I am nothing if not an entanglement of unanswerable questions, a cluster of others. I’d like to say it might be too early to tell” (24).Within this passage, the meaning behind Hermon’s answer could be in relation to the essay’s general theme. By stating that he is complicated, he could be implying that he is not easily definable by society’s structured stereotypes. Often times labels within…

“Katelyn you're up!” I heard my lanky redheaded coach Kevin screech. I slid on my batting gloves that were caked in dirt, and tightened my helmet that was meant for a 8 year old. I felt a tingling sensation rush through my body, I knew that I was going to do something great. It was the top of the 4th and we were down by two, already down a player so our outfield had to work vigorously to make sure not even a sickly hit could get past them. I could see Kenzie, a short stocky girl, with a bright pink helmet get ready to sprint to 2nd. As I got up to bat I felt the tingling sensation continue to grow, scared out of my mind that I would strike out and end the inning, I stepped up to bat.…

Is it sad that when it comes to writing a story all about me. Just one story, nothing comes to mind. This is what happens when you dedicate all your life to go to school and try to be the best you can be. Since I was a little girl all I ever did was think about going to school, getting good grades, and just making sure to be able to make your teachers happy. Especially your parents because if you did otherwise you would end up with a beating. When I got good grades it was mostly just so I would not get grounded. I always lived in a nutshell, I do not even remember if I had any friends. It is such a sad thing to me just to sit here and write. Every one else writes about how they went on a fishing trip or some intresting story. What is my story?…

Seeing the magical world of Harry Potter light up the silver screen again. Standing in the same room as the Pop Punk band All Time Low. Cracking open the pages of the Norse Gods in Rick Riordan’s Magnus Chase and The Gods of Asgard: The Hammer of Thor. Studying in my dorm room away from home. Why on earth would anyone want to miss out on these things? You see, I struggled with the question what makes life worth living for a long time, I knew that I was pushing on for something, but I could never find the words. I found my answer slowly, adding things that I was living for to the list until I realized that life was worth living for the small things, for the things in the future that you will miss out on if you leave early.…
