A hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.
The Civil war had many battles, one being in Gettysburg. This battle is known for being the turning point of the war. Being the gallant person Lincoln is, he made a speech after the Battle honoring the people of was lost fighting for the freedom of the slaves. Lincoln said in the Gettysburg Address in 1863, "that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here gave the last full measure of devotion" this speech touched a vast amount of people, and inspired a lot of people to stay loyal to what they are fighting for. Lincoln states, "my paramount object in this struggle is to save the union" Having this much of unselfishness should be considered to be heroic. Without saving the union we wouldn’t have America like it is. But Lincoln found a way to save the union by expunging slavery. By doing this Lincoln knew he had to pass the thirteenth amendment. Declaring that, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." Passing the amendment during war was the only way it was going to get passed. Doing so with a vote of 119–56 just passing the two thirds mark.
