Why Am I in College?
“Why am I in college?” There are several reasons why I am currently attending college. In my opinion, education is always an important topic in any society because it determines our future and helps us to achieve our goals. Above all, my main reasons for being in school would have to be to increase my knowledge, attain personal gratification for myself and to provide a brighter future for my family. To begin with, I’m attending school to increase my knowledge and understanding in the field of nursing. I foresee myself working with cancer patients on an oncology unit. I plan on having the hands on training as well as the knowledge I will need to pursue my field of interest. Once I have attained these skills, I will be ready to go out into the world and begin my nursing career. Besides having the skills I need to pursue my career, I also have a personal reason for doing so. My father passed away with cancer a year after I graduated high school. While in the hospital receiving treatments he was surrounded by a wonderful staff of oncology nurses. These nurses not only adore their jobs, but the patients they took care of as well. I have always admired the loving empathy they had for my father while he was hospitalized, but also for the compassion they had for their careers. I believe this wonderful staff of nurses not only steered me in the direction of nursing, but also helped me to deecide which career path I wanted to embark on. Furthermore, my most important reason for attending college is to be able to provide for my family. Nursing will open many new doors for me in life. I will be able to work flexible hours so that I will be able to spend more quality time with my children and have a more stable household. This career will provide a rewarding income and help me begin a future of unlimited possibilities for myself and my family. Therefore, I believe being a future graduate will

    | Nurses show concern everyday by listening to patient’s needs and worries. Nurses are at the forefront for the patient’s interpersonal needs and are advocates for them in many ways. They keep them informed of their plan of care and ensure their personal safety. Altruism is also demonstrated when working with our colleagues and other health care professionals. Nurses will be cooperative with changing of shifts, schedule changes, and provide teamwork by offering help to colleagues when they are needed (Johnson, Haigh, & Yayes-Bolton, 2007). Altruism is also exhibited by the nurse when he or she puts their patients first by having to sometimes work…

In addition to wanting to carry on a nursing legacy, there are aspects of myself that I would like to improve as well. For instance, I am more musically skilled than the rest of my immediate family. I’ve always been in a choir in school and this year I was accepted into my school’s female audition ensemble, Treble Choir. This enabled me to meet many new girls and become friends with them from a common interest. Having this connection means so much to me because it makes us a family. Having this support system behind me helps me feel more comfortable with others and compels me to interact with them…

College is a huge step in a person’s life, whether they attend right after high school, or waited until they had more motivation. I decided to attend college because I wanted to find who I was and discover what I am capable of. I chose ECTC because it is close to home, affordable, and small. The advice I had received from my family concerning college was that I should get my required classes “out of the way” while I am still deciding on a career. I am not the first in my family to attend college, in fact, my mother went to college as she was raising both of my older sisters.…

As my first career that I personally like would be a Registered Nurse. On the paper as an option with the box that matches my personality, also has nursing on it as well. Even thou it just say nurse on it they are still both that same. I picked this career because my grandma is very sick with Lupus; I want to be able to help my grandma get better. If I can be one more doctor and find out what’s wrong or what disease people have that they don’t know about. If I could do that, me alone could make a difference in the world in today’s generation. If we had other people that cared about how sick other people are the world would be so much better. Not as many people would be sick and there might even be a cure for some of the things we didn’t now about.…

I assume it all began with my grandmother. Starting at 4 years old, I would watch her battle with her illnesses and always want to offer a helping hand. As a matter of fact, I never anticipated being a nurse, I constantly say nursing discovered me. It was all confirmed once I began clinical in nursing school; that’s where my compassion for ministering to the ill found a place in my heart so deep it gives me butterflies. Throughout achieving my Associate’s Degree at St. Paul’s School of Nursing I have learned that nursing is not just treatment of disease with medication and procedures. It is a work of the heart, a combination of knowledge and compassion, and the gift to deliver it in a way that most benefits the patient’s and their families. It must have been all the restless evenings and hopeless days I…
