Why Are Cells So Small
In this lab, we decided to investigate an important fact that normally goes unquestioned: why are cells so small? Would it be more efficient if everyone were just made up of one or two huge cells? A source of energy and molecules are required by all living organisms, which means that the amount of the cell that is able to receive molecules is important. The group’s hypothesis was that “cells are small because small cells have a larger surface area to volume ratio”, which is important because a larger surface area allows for more molecules to diffuse at one time. The group created cells made out of blocks of agar-phenolphthalein. This allowed a simple indicator of pH, since phenolphthalein turns magenta when it comes into contact with a base. …show more content…
The prisms all had varying measurements; one measured 1x1x3 cm, another 2x2x3 cm, a third at 4x2x3 cm, and finally a single cube, which measured 3x3x3 cm. A 0.4% sodium hydroxide solution (a base) was poured into a beaker to begin testing the claim. After soaking in the solution for five minutes, each “cell” was removed and cut in half. The group measured how far the base travelled into each model by comparing the magenta color to agar’s normal off-white. Each prism had very similar measurements; the sodium hydroxide travelled approximately 4 millimeters into the cell. This supports the claim, though, since 4 millimeters takes up more of the smaller cell models than it does in the larger ones. It also shows that the rate of diffusion is the same, regardless of a cell’s size, since its makeup doesn’t

The pH indicator, phenolphthalein, turned a light shade of pink when it was in a solution with a pH of 7. Neutralization reactions occur when an acid is mixed with a base. The product of this reaction is a salt and water. These reactions are double displacement reactions, because the cation of the base mixes with the anion from the acid, forming a base, and the hydrogen from the acid mixes with the anion from the base, forming water. In this reaction, the sodium ion from the sodium hydroxide attracts to the acetate ion from the acetic acid, and the extra hydride ion bonds with the negative hydroxide ion to form water. The water produced by the reaction had a pH of seven, and so when the whole solution was light pink, we knew the reaction had fully…

The size of the surface must also be large enough to allow sufficient molecules to be transported to accommodate the metabolic processes in cell. For this reason, the surface area to volume ratio for any cell is critical. Size is also important in terms of width and length of a surface carrying out transport of materials. For example; the surface area of single-called alveoli in a person’s lungs, if spread out flat on a surface, would total the area of a football pitch.…

Life is defined as a distinctive characteristic that a living organism, dead organism or non-living thing, and it has the ability to grow, metabolize, respond to stimuli, adapt and reproduce. Cells are not smaller that 0.1 um because within the cell all the necessary components have to take place, cellular metabolism, reproduction, photosynthesis and there has to be a sufficient amount of space for that to occur. Once you get to this tineness the machinery in this cell cannot work anymore when a cell gets to be too small its functions are impaired and it’s ability and it wouldn’t even be able to meet its own chemical needs. In addition, the substances that cells work with are already really small, both ions and very small molecules. But you can’t decrease the size of these things, the cell has to be able to support these ions and such. Scientists have the ability to detect something as small as an electron. Electrons are the smallest part of an atom. Since every molecule as at least one electron and it takes several hundred to even in the thousands to make cellular material the assumption is able to be made that there are not cells that are too small to detect.…

The book Last of the Mohicans is based on a novel by James Fenimore Cooper, and revolves around a clan of Native Americans called the Mohicans. The main characters are Hawkeye, his adopted father Chingachgook, and his adopted brother Uncas. Chingachgook, and his son Uncas, are the last of the Mohican tribe or blood line. The movie is also based on these three characters. The era that both stories take place in is the 18th century during the seven years war between Britain and France. The movie is a romance torn between war and race. The Mohicans along with Hawkeye try to save the daughters of a British colonel, but the conflict arises when Magua of the Hurons attempts to kill the Mohicans and kidnap the two girls. There is also conflict between the relationships of all the characters. The villain in both stories is the same and his name is Magua, who is from the Huron tribe. In the book Magua wants revenge against Col. Munro, by trying to marry one of daughters and hurt his pride, but in the movie he wants and does kill Munro. Magua also begins to…

Slavery was always a controversial issue in America. Many people saw slavery as an essential part of life in every aspect, while others saw it as immoral and an injustice to humanity. In the 1840s when Manifest Destiny started to thrive, things began to heat up. New territories meant a possibility for a new slave or free state in America. Because the new territories were allowed the right of popular sovereignty to determine whether they would have slaves or not, abolitionists and non-abolitionists were at a constant battle to gain a new state.…
